I just looked at a PA Aimpoint clone that hasn't been used in 2 years. The inner LR44 battery had started leaking and corroding. I don't think it did any real damage but I'm gonna be doing a bit of cleaning with vinegar and qtips. Might want to check on those button cells.

Thanks for reminding me, been meaning to do this for a while now. Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.

That's good advice for any device with batteries.

Lithium batteries don't leak. But anything that uses alkaline batteries should be checked regularly, and the battery removed if it's going to be stored unused for long periods.

I did not know that lithium batteries won't leak. I'll check all of mine tomorrow!

I just checked the battery on my Aimpoint Comp ML2. I discovered that I had left it on for the last six months and it was still working. This is the original Duracell D1/3N battery that has been installed for at least ten years. I wonder how much longer it will last.

6 months is nothing. Most Aimpoints will run continuously for several years on the same battery. Typically 30k to 50k hours straight.

Two alkaline LR44 were the old equivalent to the single lithium 2L76, DL1/3N, etc. I'll be picking up one of those lithium versions this time.
