I have been having some knee pain during exercise. I have been trying to get back into jogging and this is when the pain started. It’s isolated to the front knee cap area vertically. It’s intermittent and hurts more in the beginning. My knee will have a sharp pain and feel weak as it might give out.

I think a brace may help but after a quick search there are too many options. I don’t think compression alone is enough but I don’t need a hinged brace.

Is there anything in between that is recommended?

You should see a Dr. and let him tell you what you need.

Taking good care of it now, could out off having surgery later.

The pain is being caused by something.

It may be ligaments or cartilage or both.

Good luck.

Step one jogging isn’t a good ideA.
Don’t know your age, but walking and swimming and cycling are much easier on your joints.
Even resistance training weights bands etc is better than jogging.
If you are trying to get in better shape/ lose weight, 90% of weight loss happens in the kitchen not the gym

Yep. Go see an orthopedic doctor. He may refer you to a physical therapist. This isn't a bad thing. If you're getting back into jogging/running after being sedentary for a while, you may need to do some strengthening exercises for the muscles and ligaments in your knees/legs before you're ready to fully jump back into it. Even just a session or two of PT to show you the ropes, followed by a period of home exercises, can make a difference in the stability and strength of your knees.

I'd hold off on investing in a brace until you consult with a doctor. Your doctor might not recommend using any brace stronger than a compression sleeve. If your knee issues is caused/exacerbated by muscle weakness, using a rigid brace as a crutch can actually make that worse in the long run. It can be better to strengthen the existing structure of the knee (if possible) than try to prop it up with outside help and exacerbate the atrophy of your own inherent support.

Your knee pain could also be caused by something else downstream or upstream, like lack of proper foot support, flat feet, bad posture, poor running form, etc. Your doctor and/or physical therapist is in the best position to tell if it's caused by something inherent to your knee, or is a symptom of an issue elsewhere in the body. If it's a footwear or foot support issue, a dedicated running store can often provide some guidance for specific shoes and insoles to correct that, or in some cases you may need to consult with a podiatrist to see about getting some custom orthotic insoles made.

I went through all of this back when I was a sedentary, overweight college student who decided to get serious about becoming a cop. It took a combination of weight loss, knee/leg strengthening PT exercises, quality running shoes with extra pronation control, and custom orthotic inserts to get me to the point where I could run without pain on a regular basis. Even then, I still hated running. Big Grin

Professional's Choice neoprene adjustable brace. They made horse boots and braces, then got into making low back, knee and wrist braces for riders. Good stuff, I've used all three.

Mueller's braces work okay, and are low cost. Much better are DonJoy braces. The Donjoy Playmaker II is what I recommend to patients. Might be too large for your issue though.

Check our Push braces from BraceLab. I haven’t found anything else that comes close. By far the most comfortable and superior braces made.

Both a friend (knee replacement) and I (MCL,ACL,Meniscus) use a Don Joy brace. I am happy with it. We were both skiing Steamboat a year ago with good results. i.e. we can still walk!

Best advice right here.
I wore a Mueller brace thinking it was just pain from being over 50. It got worse and I finally went to my family doctor and I got referred to a surgeon. Surgery was last July on my leg and knee. Don't be me and wait until it gets bad.

Yea but go to the right Doc.
I was at my Primary for a wellness exam and at the time I was a week out from a sprained ankle.
She just said go to your Walgreens or whatever. Eek
That reminds me ~ I need to find a new Primary Doc. Frown

These are great braces, but I believe they are built differently for different conditions. I have one from a torn PCL, and I was led to understand it's different than a brace for different conditions. Probably still best to go through a specialist.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

What they said. Could me some quad tendonitis where it connects to the knee. Or you could have something more serious. Either way get some professional advice before you start jogging on a busted knee.

(Advise from a guy with a busted knee!) Big Grin
