My brother and I had this conversation and decided that if we were limited to John Browning only designs we would be OK.

The guns I would pick:

Winchester 1890 22 LR pump

Remington Model 81 in 35 Remington (a somewhat refined model 8)

Remington Model 11 or Auto 5 shotgun

FN Browning Model 1910

Hi Power (if you wish to argue this gun is off limits as it was mostly designed by Saive, you can substitute a 1911)

This list would accomplish anything I wished to do, and I would not feel terribly handicapped by these choices.

I'd be fine with the 1890 & a 1911.

No, in rifles and shotguns there are later models I much prefer. A 1911 is fine for a 45 auto. In 9mm there are more modern designs I prefer. And I like revolvers.

I'd be fine for pistols and shotguns. Not for rifles, though. Paul Mauser was the genius who invented the 1898 Mauser and there hasn't been a better bolt action design since.

An A5 isn’t a compromise nor is a 1911 in my opinion. I’d be happy enough with an 1895 as well.

I’d spend some time in the gym before I started down that path. It’s no coincidence horses were integral part of hunting

if I was limited to a Colt 1911, a Winchester 1894 rifle and a Winchester 1897 shotgun, I think I could survive OK. Throw in a 22 rifle and an 1885 High Wall in a long-range caliber and I think it would be hard to argue you'd be limited in any significant capacity.

Remington Model 11 or Auto 5 shotgun

Such a great design. The Auto 5 shotgun and the Colt 1911 have stood the test of time.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

No. Anyone who would limit themselves to antique weapons should also be limited to only medical care of the same period.

So, 30 super carry and 8.6 BLK only for you?

I’d swap out the FN 1910 for a Colt 1908 pocket hamerless. All of those were/are quality firearms
and would get the job done. I’d prefer an AR and maybe a modern 9mm (although I carry a 1911 for my edc.) if I knew I was going into seriously hostile place.

Does the hi-power still count, it’s mostly his…

Browning A5, 1911, and a Browning machine gun would be a hell of a 3-gun. Or zombie killers.

1894 Winchester Lever Gun, Trapper in .30-30.
1895 Winchester SRC in .30 government 06.
1897 Winchester Trench Gun
1911.
And if full auto is included: Colt Monitor
Possibly: Browning High Power.
This arsenal would not be too limiting!
So I would be OK, I think!

Is this a scenario where everybody else is limited to the same stuff, or is it just me? If the former, I could live with it, but I wouldn't be happy about it. If the latter, absolutely not.

The man was a genius and made great stuff for his time, but technology has progressed. A lot of that progression is based on designs and concepts that he pioneered, so we definitely owe him for that, but 100 years has brought the tech a long way.

I would not want to carry, issue, or maintain 1911s or Hi-Powers as duty guns, and the 1897 is inferior in just about every way to a modern pump like an 870 or Mossberg 500. As to rifles, the AR-15 is absolutely in a class by itself for reliability, serviceability, modularity, and ergonomics. There's nothing that Browning made that comes close to competing with it.

Except in the case of his M2 machine gun, which still has not been replaced.
