The rest of the time until HS, it was PB&J and on rare occasion a turkey & swiss cheese sandwich.

Late 90s:

The mom of a really good friend of mine in band class was the head cook at the middle school. Back then they were given a budget and had to source ingredients and recipes based on the budget, not on nutritional standards imposed by Michelle Obama. His mom would cook for their family of eight for a certain number of dollars per person, and if it met the metric, then it could be used at school. One time I went over to their house to hang out with my buddy and she was making Cholula enchilada casserole. It was possibly the best thing I’ve ever tasted. After getting my seal of approval as well as the family’s It appeared at school two weeks later. She pressure cooked Lord knows how many pounds of pork and Cholula , and everyone got hot lunch that day. Nowadays, the things in school cafeterias are all pre-cooked and processed foods.

She has the best recipes and the family looked far from malnourished. He got blown up bad in Afghanistan and I lost touch with him.

I've never heard it called that. In Southern Louisiana, rice pudding is a staple dessert. No surprise.

I went to elementary school in south central PA which was Pennsylvania Dutch county. The lunch day I remember most was Thursday with a Lebanon bologna sandwich (good) and sauerkraut (which I didn’t like at the time). But the best part was the square of a cake type cornbread with a sweet dark brown crust for the desert. I’ve tried to track down the cornbread recipe all these years and haven’t really come close.

This chat did trigger a memory. Fish stick day was HUGE in elementary school. Everyone bought lunch on fish stick day.

If course the days you didn't you had the metal lunch box that you CAREFULLY and thoughtfully selected the weeks before school. After all you had to carry it all year. Emergency, Adam 12 and Batman were ones I recall having.

2 Pickle and Pimento Sandwiches on Wonder Bread topped off with a pack of Hostess Cupcakes.

I remember taking a bologna and cheese sandwich with mayonnaise, wrapped in foil in a brown paper bag. The Mississippi heat would guarantee the cheese would almost be melted by lunchtime. How that combination did not take us out is a good question. We ate cafeteria food on Fridays, hotdogs made with fluffy yellow rolls cooked by the ladies there. I have not had a hotdog that good since, and that was almost 60 years ago.

Mom made me Hebrew National Salami, sliced thick, with relish on it on white bread. hated it. Still gag thinking about it. Always had good Hostess cupcakes, Twinkies or Yodels for dessert. Remember and recently found my Fat Albert lunch box. Tried to buy lunch when I was allowed. Sloppy Joes were a favorite. Pizza tasted like cardboard.

Now that you mention it, I do remember the one where I was suspended for attacking a vice principal with a paper bag.....

True story.

All I remember is we had fish sticks on Friday.

Going to middle school and high school in Biloxi, Miss. we had a lot of the cajun staples. Red beans and rice (sometimes with sausage in it). Chicken A La king with rice in it. Shrimp and crawfish in a
lot of rice dishes.

It was filling.

I think about Wednesday enchiladas

Every Thursday was Red Beans and Rice day when I lived in LA.

A little post childhood, I had lunch in the college eatery. They had really good hamburgers.

The real childhood lunch at school that stays in memory was at Page Military Academy. A common part of any meal was mashed potatoes that you ate with a spoon, if you could stand them. I hated those potatoes and I hated that school. Seven years old and away from home Monday through Friday. All alone in a crowd of strangers. Survival was the goal. Bad memories only of that school year.

Elementary school in Ellisville, MS. Mrs. Camp ran the lunch room. I have never eaten do good outside my home. She could cook!

Public Elementary School hot lunch line, horse meat day w/mash potatoes and carrots. Not bad. Didn't know it was horse meat until I learned about it later in my adulthood. Actually tasted pretty good.

I remember the rectangle pizza's. Heinz I believe.

In grade school, 'Shepards Pie' on most Fridays, made from whatever was left over from the week's lunches.
It was never the same week to week and was never good. Nobody was a fan of that.
