“Paratroopers from the Canadian military were seen dropping into a military base following a catastrophic explosion that killed seven people and injured dozens more on Saturday.
The blaze broke out at around 4pm local time before spreading to the surrounding area. ……… Following the explosion, doctors in Edmonton, around 120 miles northwest of the base, said they were being inundated with patients.
'It is more patients than any of us want to count right now. It's a disaster. It's a one in every 15 to 25-year disaster,' Warren Thirsk, an emergency department doctor at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, told CBC News. ……… The fire also disrupted advance voting ahead of Monday's referendum on whether Alberta should begin a process that could lead to independence from Canada. …”
"The blast reportedly occurred after a gas line or well was hit during a live-fire training exercise at Base Wainwright in Alberta"
No one knew a gas line/well was situated inside a life-fire training center?

Agreed, not goin for the gas pocket/pipeline bs. Nobody builds a military firing range anywhere near something like that, not even stupid people.

According to the Government of Canada, more than 200 active gas wells and associated pipelines can be found in the CFB Wainwright area.
While I find it unlikely that a gas structure was actually within the firing area and hit during live fire, the live fire exercise may have sparked the wildfire, which - fanned by the reported 100+ kph winds - may have then spread over to an area with a gas structure leading to an explosion.
The base and training area itself isn't all that big either at only 609 square km (~378 square miles), with its fair concentration of gas wells for such a relatively small area. So it wouldn't take much for a large wildfire fanned by strong winds to spread through a decent portion of it.

On the radio news this morning on my way in to work, they said that leadership knew about the fire for hours before it got out of hand, but didn't suspend the training. Then the wind shifted suddenly or something, it changed direction towards the troops, and got out of control. Sounds like a very bad deal, and I imagine heads will roll if that's true.

It could be coincidence...
"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Apparently the fire travelled over a km in 30 seconds.
quote:
The fire was a kilometer away when the wind shifted. It is not normal for a fire to move a kilometer in 30 to 60 seconds,' Rutland said.
'I spoke to my commander last night, and he said within 30 seconds to a minute they saw no fire, and then there was a fire right on top of them.'

Obviously a fire doesn’t actually move that fast - but it can smolder its way and then burst into high flames with a wind shift.

Grenade started deadly fire at Canada military base
Story by Andrea Hamblin
A grenade launcher sparked a fire that killed four soldiers and injured dozens more at a Canadian military base, officials said on Thursday...
...Brig Vanessa Hanrahan, commander of the military police, said initial investigations found that the fire ignited on the base’s automatic grenade launcher range during routine training activities...
...Brig Hanrahan also confirmed that there was no indication that natural gas infrastructure had been in the line of the fire and that, contrary to earlier reports, no “explosion” had occurred.
