I have many quarts of regular (non-synthetic) motor oil that I have probably had for 15-18 years. They have never been opened and have just sat in my garage. I used to buy in bulk and used regular oil until the truck I bought in 2002. Since then I have exclusively used synthetic oil for the last 17.5 years in my truck. I plan to move in 12-18 months so I am starting to clean things out. I am curious if the oil is still good and I can sell it with an age disclaimer, or if I should just properly dispose of it.

Way too much thought on this. Take it to AutoZone and dump in recycling bin. Don't stress over something small while moving. What could you even expect to get selling it?

Ha very true. I am just gathering things into piles to sell, donate, or throw away. Of course I would like to get money for things, but you are probably correct that I would only get a few dollars for what I have. I am still kind of curious though if anyone knows the answer to if it expires if it has never been even opened.

Unopened still sealed, use it.

I gave mine to the guy at the auto parts place. It no longer met my engine specs. Could have used in in the mowers. Sometimes it is worth it to trash stuff and free up garage/living space. People want everything for free now. Not worth my time

I love your signature line. I used to find it funny when I owned a Suzuki Hyabusa and something like an Acura NSX, Ferrari, etc would challenge me off the line or while riding and I would leave them in the dust thinking what I paid for my ride and what they did for theirs. I had much more bang for the buck when it came to the power factor. Now I ride a Honda Goldwing and just enjoy a comfy ride.

List it in Classic Car venues.

High in ZDDP (Zinc compounds) and are critical for engines that use flat tappet cams/lifters and provide needed metal wear protection with high shear and surface level bonding.

If you want to email me the number of qts and make/year weight and about what you want, I can post to car forums I am on and see if anyone is interested.

(local buy would be best)

How much is your time worth?

Most of the time it is just cheaper giving stuff away.

Have you ever enjoyed a garage sale?

Most motor oils ( conventional ) have a five (5) year shelf life, that's where the manufacturer will guarantee it.

Is it still good after that? Most likely, if it's been sealed, and stored in reasonable conditions. If you open it and there is no sediment in the bottom of the bottle, then it's most likely OK.

I wouldn't use it in my vehicle, but old lawn mower, chainsaw blade lube, sure.

Yeah I hate garage sales and since I have a good amount of time, I am trying to make some money by selling things individually. There are things that take up space that I want to sell such as top quality weight lifting equipment, beer brewing, saltwater fish equipment, etc. I would prefer to sell as I can now than out of desperation at a garage sale.

There is nothing wrong with the motor oil. New oil probably does have better additives and such in it as the technology has changed a bit since then. BUT, it won't hurt a darn thing to run it, if it meets your engines characteristics.

It fine to use is the containers are seeled and not damaged.

The question would be does it meet the specs for your car now. Most cars today use a lighter oil them they did years ago.

Sounds like sigmonkey knows his older oils. I would follow his advice.

Dump it.

The cars of today are not limited to just the correct viscosity. Instead, some cars, such those from GM, may require they be Dexos1 or 2 approved. Done with the 502 series of oil requirements, like VW requires. These specs and approvals are not viscosity driven.

The newer oils are SN rated and are backwards compatible but oils as old as yours are likely SJ and we are now at SN with SP coming. There's a chance those containers say SG or SH and those are not recommended for cars after 1988 because the are not very good at sludge control.

You probably paid $1.49 a quart. Don't try and use it in a modern car. Recycle it.

^^ THIS ^^

Do you know somebody tight on money (e.g. teenager) with an 80s car/truck? To insure the additives mixing after nearly 20 years of sitting, I'd put it in a paint shaker before using since it's much more thorough than hand shaking.

If not, I'd recycle it at an auto-parts store.

Thought the high zinc old was bad for the catalytic convertor?
But, as sigmonkey pointed out, is required for flat tappet lifters.

LOL thank you! I think the fact motorcycles/scooters must be leaned to turn is what makes them so much more fun than a car or trike. In all honesty I have more fun riding even a small motorcycle than any car. Add to this the fact that many (like your Hyabusa) are so powerful which gives them such quick acceleration out of the corner that you just leaned through, or 150+ mph top speed. Few cars can accelerate as fast as most any 600cc+ motorcycle.

Gold Wing is an amazing motorcycle, I had a 2001 which my wife and I enjoyed for years until she was unable to ride any longer.

No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

Plenty of cat equipped engines needed the higher zinc motor oils. There’s no shortage of people around here that would be glad to have the opportunity to buy that oil at a reasonable price-OP could very likely recoup his original cost if he wanted to.

Someone with an old tractor might be able to use it. It should be better than the oil they came with. Or take to Walmart automotive section for recycle.

Owners of older air cooled BMW motorcycles called airheads lament the loss of the high zinc oils due to EPA regs. If your stuff is 20-50 you may be sitting on some money.
