Hadn't seen this on here yet: German media are reporting today that Heckler & Koch have decided to go ahead with plans to build a manufacturing plant for civilian-use guns in Columbus, GA. As confirmed by HK CEO Scheuch, the company would invest $23M in a 40,000 sq ft manufacturing facility for civilian handguns and sporting rifles. Plans call for approx. 80 production employees.

As per the press reports, turns out that 40% of their revenue last year (roughly 75M of 200M Euros) is from civilian sales in the US. Apparently, their sales here doubled over the last years. Also, with the current political situation , HK see a pro-gun climate that helped them decide to move ahead with their plans. On the other hand, they are said to fear potential import problems going forward, based on President Trump's "America First" policies. Having in-country manufacturing would alleviate any import issues.

Firearms for use by military and police will continue to be built in Oberndorf, Germany. This is interesting, in that their previous plans to start manufacturing in New Hampshire were based on military rifle production (I think it was the HK417 at the time, but could be wrong). This time, they clearly see the civilian market as strong enough to warrant US-based manufacturing.

No words in any of the press articles as to when they plan to start producing firearms here.

H&K already has a manufacturing facility in Columbus. All the HK45s are being produced there. It sounds like they are adding another building to the site.

I thought that the HK45 was built by a subcontractor in NH? I knew it used to be anyhow.

Seems like something's up with US production because HK45Cs are coming in from DE again.

Spoke with a rep about that at the NRA convention and they said that since HK was no longer in New Hampshire, current production HK45's and 45c's were coming from Germany til the Columbus plant was up and running.

They were 're-introducing' the mini MP5 (semi auto) pistol variant.

Kinda pricey but a cool concept.

Wonder if that will be made here...

40k square feet isn't very much space for manufacturing. Maybe an addition or assembly space? Not very much room to do fabrication.

My understanding this is the first of several planned expansions of US manufacturing. With the USMC seriously looking to expand issuing of the M27 and the Army having selected the lighter-weight version of their G28 for it's Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System, additional manufacturing capacity will be needed.

Excellent news, I always like to hear of new gun plants right here in the USA.

Easier to keep an eye on production and inventory?

I wish HK would also bring back their sporting firearms line.

Otherwise, great news and a long time coming.

Good news, and a good start, once they get a foothold and control over production/distribution perhaps they will expand.

Convenient; Fort Benning is just down the road from Columbus in case they need a proving ground. Wink
