** Updating this as I will be able to get a book signed by the author on Sunday the 28th. Open to any current member, doesn't matter if you have a copy of the book already. The book will probably be a quality paperback as he is not sure how many hardback copies he will have available on that date. I'll pick a winner out of the hat on Saturday the 27th. Let me know in your post if and how you want the book signed to.

I'm posting this here instead of the lounge due to the book containing a photo of Hanoi Jane being arrested by the author. Move if need be.

The book is "Saigon Guns A True Story of Aerial Combat In The Fall Of 1972 by John Thomas Hoffman." It's coming out in mid-April and you can check it out at www.saigonguns.com. I know the author, and he has some amazing stories from his time in Viet Nam.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I just finished reading the book and I now have a better understanding of what those pilots went thru. It was also disheartening (to put it politely) to read just how our own government, to this day, denies benefits to those veterans who served during that time period in 1972.

John will be doing a book signing here at our local winery on the 28th, and I plan on getting a copy to do a karma here on SF soon after.

John's service was in the Army as a combat helicopter pilot in Vietnam from December 1971 until December of 1972. However, his "official" record and DD-214 did not show that he was in Vietnam from June 1972 through December 1972. It showed him being at Fort Bragg from June to December 1972, but Fort Bragg wasn't really sure exactly where he was.

Since President Nixon had publicly stated that there were no "Army" units in Vietnam after a certain date, all those missions that John and other Army personnel flew starting in June 1972 "didn't happen." However, credit was given to the Air Force and Navy pilots for their participation during that same time period.

John was able to provide copies of orders etc. to show his time there and was eventually able to get most of his record corrected and get VA benefits for the Agent Orange related medical issues that he has. Others that were with the Army and in Vietnam during that same period (pilots, ground crew, etc.) have not all been so lucky in getting their records corrected and the VA benefits they earned and deserve.

There's a lot more in the book about this whole issue.

Finished the book last night. I highly recommend it. I had no idea that the Army did not acknowledge the service of any troops in Vietnam the last part of 1972 (to this day it continues). B92F, thanks again for making me aware of this book.

I will check it out. My first job after Uni, I worked for Everett "Razz" Raspberry who got a kill in Operation Bolo. I was surprised at how relaxed his management style was. He valued training and didn't throw me into the deep end of the pool. I learned a lot from him.

Disheartening certainly is the polite description.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
