I was sent a link to this article and found it interesting. It confirms what I have believed that many who take the time to buy a gun and obtain a carry permit don't carry it frequently. Obviously there are a number of valid reasons for not carrying. The video embedded in the article website has additional facts and context to the article. Some of the article comments are worth reading. https://www.krdo.com/news/conc...-carrying-/860858481 Conceal carry or not? Thousands of permits but who is actually carrying? Krystal Story Posted: Nov 13, 2018 12:55 AM MST Updated: Nov 13, 2018 11:42 AM MST COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The number of Americans applying and getting their firearm conceal carry permits is higher than ever before. It's been steadily increasing since states legalized their own version of standards back in the 1990's. In Colorado, there are nearly 400,000 permits, but the state's regulations require a Sheriff to approve a permit before it can be given out. In El Paso County, there are 47,107 active permits issued, but a new nationwide study by a pro-gun organization, Crime Prevention Research Center suggests not many people are carrying. Their findings for 2018 say only 2.4% of Americans are conceal-carrying their gun all the time. Of the 17.25 million people who have permits in the United States, 2.4 percent of that is about 414,000 people with a gun on them at all time. If we take that percentage and apply it to El Paso County's number of permits, that means there are 1,130 people who are concealed carrying across the community. Depending on who you ask, they conceal carry for different reasons. Billie Nigro shopping around at a local gun show said she carries because, "I feel safer when I go into what's called a gun-free zone, those are not safe places." The process of getting a permit isn't easy, in fact, it can take up six weeks for someone to get their permit in through the mail after they take a class, and apply. Bryan Schmid who is taking conceal carry class at Magnum Shooting Center said wants his permit because, "I just want to be able to defend myself, defend my wife or those that are around us." On the other side of the controversial issue is Shannon Watts. She's part of the group, Moms Demand Action. They are an organization who works to make stronger gun laws. Watts says, "the concealed carry process in Colorado is strong. One of the strongest states in the whole country is California. And we're hopeful states will follow their laws and make room for changes that increase the training standards." Sheriff Elder whose job is to sign the 47 thousand permits that have come through his office so far says that number doesn't reflect the people actually carrying. "Just cause I got 47,000 permits out, doesn't mean there are 47,000 people out in this community carrying a concealed handgun," he says. So, why aren't people concealing their guns in public despite going through the legal and lengthy process? Some don't realize the hassle of figuring out how to conceal the firearm. For men, there are hundreds of holsters that sit on their belt, others in a pocket, and another on a shoulder strap. Women, on the other hand, have a tougher time finding somewhere to hide their gun. Conceal carry purses exist for that very reason. They typically have special pockets designed with a holster inside where the gun sits in a safe, secure spot. Another reason why someone may not conceal carry is the process is too long. Nathaniel Frieson who openly carries says it's what he thinks keeps his family safe. Frieson says, "I believe that it does deter people from doing things." His wife, Karissa Russell says it makes her feel secure as well. "I know for sure nobody will really mess with us since they obviously see it. He's our protector. He does a good job," she says. Despite the hassle, so many people go into the application process thinking they'll conceal carry all the time. Robert Garlast, a student in the Magnum class said, "I plan to carry it everywhere with me but I just hope I never have to use it." That's even though the numbers say he won't.

Go ahead punk, make my day |
Like most things in life, people simply lack the dedication to do something consistently. There are certainly times people can't carry legally and some logistical hurdles which prevent occasionally carrying, but aside from those people simply prefer to do without the 'hassle'. Most people don't put enough time into carrying to get past the challenge of it being 'comfortable' to them - not physically comfortable, but mentally comfortable. Once you get past that, its just another tool on your belt / in your pocket, etc. Like keys, a flashlight, a pocketknife, etc.

At the time I took the CCW class the stats were 10% carried all the time. Still quite low.

I carry pretty much all the time, except to the office. My employer has a strict no-firearms policy and if I got caught carrying on the premises I would be summarily fired. The policy also prohibits leaving it in the car if it's parked on company property, so my only choice is to leave it at home. I've considered talking to the CEO (who claims to have an open-door policy) about the foolishness of "gun-free zones", but the culture here is so liberal that I'd likely get fired just for bringing it up.

And what percentage of concealed carriers will admit they are, and admit that they actually carry to some random survey taker (likely on a random the phone call)?

Still finding my way |
I can only speak for myself. Myself told me that he carry's 100% of the time he's wearing pants. It's within arms reach when the pants are off.

Too old to run, too mean to quit! |
I thought the whole idea of concealed carry was that the gun was concealed! Should someone "interview" me about the subject, I would tell them that I do not carry, altho, I am a firm believer in the concept! That ought to confuse the hell out of them. Elk There has never been an occasion where a people gave up their weapons in the interest of peace that didn't end in their massacre. (Louis L'Amour) "To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors, is sinful and tyrannical. First, I would answer in the negative to any surveyor who asked me. Second, I can't legally carry at work, nor can I have it in my car. This means that I am effectively disarmed the majority of the time I am out of my house. Also, I know a number of people who have a permit and don't even attempt to carry on a regular basis. They didn't get it to carry a gun, they got it so their options are open in the future. If anything ever does happen in the future that will necessitate carrying, they can just do it without having to go through all the fuss. "The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people." "Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy." "I did," said Ford, "it is." "So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?" "It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want." "You mean they actually vote for the lizards." "Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course." "But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?" "Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should |
Most major companies and government employers prohibit carry at work for starters so that covers a large percentage. Then many would not respond that they do carry. There seem to be more stories in the news recently about carriers ending the careers of criminals so I take that as a positive. ___________________________ Avoid buying ChiCom/CCP products whenever possible.
