take a good look at what your working position would be with this in your hands, stooped over too much or on your knees while using such a dirt tool isn't very efficient **************~~~~~~~~~~ "I've been on this rock too long to bother with these liars any more." ~SIGforum advisor~ "When the pain of staying the same outweighs the pain of change, then change will come."~~sigmonkey

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ if you can find a handle that is a close fit then take a piece of broken glass to be used as a scraper to fit handle to the head. The broken glass edge stays sharper for scraping a lot longer than a metal edge might last. Been there and done it and had the t-shirt. .................... drill sgt.

It looks to me to be a "foot axe". When logs were transfered to the mill by wagon, dudes would ride/stand on top and make a flat side on the logs for milling. The ridges on the back, and the angle that you would hold it make me think this. But am not 100% certain.

Well, I grew up in Tampa...no rocks..sand, sugar sand or regular soil....easy to dig trenches in, but my brothers and I cheered when dad bought a used ditch witch...made my weekends easier. When we moved to the mountains of NC, the neighbors called your tool a “grub hoe” she used it in the garden and it had a short handle (foot to a foot and a half) she used it while on her knees weeding or diggin up plants...
