Years back when it seemed like the 60w non dimmable bulbs were the way to go in my house I slowly started changing them over mostly with the great value brand from Walmart. They promised a 13 year lifespan, but that has not been my experience at all. Who makes a bulb that will actually last more than 3 or 4 years?

I have had really good luck with Phillips LED bulbs. I have one that stays on 24-7 in a dark corner of the den that is 12 years old.

You pay more but they seem to last.

I’m watching this thread. I need dimmable with daylight uv, and I’ve been screwed on every bulb since the original set wore out for my recessed lighting.

If you have a Lowe’s store close to you, you might want to consider this bulb. We have over 80 of these bulbs in use in our home today that we purchased five years ago and we have not had a single bulb go out (knock on wood).

They are currently on sale for $1.00 a bulb (if you buy the 16 bulb pack). They have these in Soft White, Bright White, and Daylight. These are also DIMMABLE.

I had the great idea to change over to LED as well. Bought CREE bulbs. The first one lasted two weeks. A few more were gone within a month or two.

I screwed my old bulbs back in and threw rest of the CREEs in the trash.

fyi the LED bulbs labeled “for enclosed fixtures” last much longer than other LED bulbs. Something to do with heat reduces the life of the bulbs.

We use these throughout our house and are very happy. Get the warm white. It replicates incandescent very well.

When LED bulbs first came out, companies made all these promises of 20+ years of life. What a load of crap. I have purchased LED bulbs from a number of brands and almost all of them never last more than a year or so. Some much less. One way or another, they are going to make sure you keep buying new ones.

The products have the potential of long life. It's just crap designed, fab'ed, made in chicom is, well, crap.

That being said, I've had luck with Feit. At least, for me, LEDs have been better than the CFL's. That was a government shit show.

For us Phillips and FEIT seem to be better than the average cheapest brand. Like already said those rated to be enclosed are a good bet for longer life. Yeah the life does not seem to live up to the potential that is hyped but no denying the savings in energy used. Our name brand LED security floodlights for the outside have been working for several years now and got them crazy cheap at Menards.

NO ONE!!!!!!! Stick with a standard Edison bulb, you'll be ahead dollar wise as LEDs are stupid expensive in comparison and I haven't had one yet last longer than 2-3 years. I stick to the big brand names like Phillips, Sylvania, GE, and CREE. They all suck!

That “13 year lifespan” is a complete farce. It’s been my experience that LED bulbs actually have a shorter life than incandescent bulbs. I’ve seen many in my house go bad within a year or two, it’s a complete joke.

I think the electronics part fries itself over time, they claim that LED bulbs don’t “get hot“ but the electronics actually do

Skins, thank you! I’ll look these up and get them in- I have birds and plants in that room, so I like full spec.

We have recently gone to Feit at very reasonable prices from Costco, around $2-3/bulb depending on wattage. Haven’t had them long enough to speak to longevity, but love the selectable color temperature range which makes them great for any application, and for my wife who has no interest in learning about color temperature.

Funny, I have a CREE bulb that has been on 24/7 for almost 10 years.

Unless it’s a very specific use case, I buy at Walmart keep the receipt in the box and move on. To paraphrase Drago, if it dies, it dies. Walmart takes anything back and I will walk my azz right up to the service each tee and say this is warranted for x and I bought it on y here’s the receipt. Store credit or cash. Whatever is easier and the worker who doesn’t give a rip agreed and I go buy more.

To echo others...Philips brand LED seem to have lasted much longer than any other that I tried. Mixed results too. My porch light, on every night is about 8 years. Lamp post, I get only two years. Dimmable Philips in my bathroom also about 10years, but they flicker like mad. Replaced dimmer switch to get rid of flicker.

Anyone have experience that certain brands last better or worse mounted in a particular orientation? Base up, base down, horizontal?
