It pays to be extremely aware of what is going on around you anymore. I wonder if this was a racially motivated crime? http://www.wapt.com/article/wo...-in-jackson/12029188 ![]() Chelsie Lynn Kirschten, 23, was at the intersection of Fortification and State streets along with a female friend just before midnight when police said a man came up to the driver's side of the car and shot Kirschten in the back and ran away. Police said the shooting appears to be random. Nothing was stolen and the shot was fired through the closed window of Kirschten's white Pontiac G6. The gunman didn't say anything and walked away after the shooting, Cmdr. Tyree Jones said. “We’re still in the preliminary stages. We’re not sure if they know one another or if there is any type of affiliation, but based on preliminary indications, this just seems to be possibly an individual just walked up to the vehicle and fired a shot,” Jones said. WAPT-TV Kirschten drove down the street after she was shot, police said. Her car came to a stop at Fortification Street near the Interstate 55 exit. She died at the scene, police said. Jones said the passenger in Kirschten's car described the shooter as a black man wearing dark-colored clothing, possibly with a hood. Kirschten had just started taking classes this week, and according to a coworker, had planned to leave her job at Twin Peaks in Jackson in two weeks. A manager at the restaurant said she had taken another job, but said that Kirschten was a joy to work with. He said she always had a smile on her face. Co-workers put up a makeshift memorial at Twin Peaks, where Kirschten had worked since the restaurant opened in 2013. Kirschten had been scheduled to work at the restaurant Friday afternoon, the manager said. "She always smiled, even on her roughest days," friend Faith Marie Davenport said. "No matter what she was going through, she was always there for her family and friends." Davenport said Kirschten brightened a room when she walked in the door. "She knew how to put a smile on anyone's face and make them laugh," Davenport said. "She was brave, beautiful and had such a wise soul." Jones said there is no evidence at this point to tie the shooter to any other crimes. "This is a very tragic situation," Jones said. "Of course, it draws a lot of attention, not only from the community, but from the surrounding areas as well. We would like to identify this individual who is responsible and hold him accountable and charge him, as well." Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS. _________________________

That is a bad area of town. My daughter went to college there, and I was very happy when she finished her degree. I went to get a prescription filled for her at a drug store close by. There was a uniformed LEO standing behind the register. It was that bad. I never felt safe.

Very sad. Always be home by 10pm. The chance of bad things happening after 10pm goes up exponentially.

Combat zone! That's not a good area in daylight hours. When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are undisturbed. Luke 11:21 "Every nation in every region now has a decision to make. Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists." -- George W. Bush

There are times that you are forced to travel through a less desirable part of a city. Usually not a problem. Most in those areas aren't homicidal. A few are nuts.
Not necessarily the case. http://www.forecastingprincipl..._Poulsen,_Simple.pdf

Someone coming up out of nowhere from behind ids almost impossible to defend against. Short of never stopping, the speed at which it happens makes it long odds. Being in a home location isn't a sure safe zone. There are numerous cases where the victim was attacked in their own driveway.

If it was random or racially motivated or gang initiation etc., then why just shoot her? How long does it take to put a round or three in the passenger as well?? For that one reason it feels like there is some more specific motive at play. God rest her soul and watch over all in her life. Take Care, Shoot Safe, Chris

Maybe her windows were tinted. The shooter would obviously know there'd be a driver but not necessarily a passenger. Sigforum has a member that posted several years sgo about foiling this in a bad neighborhood. He paid attention to his surroundings while stopped and in the side view mirror noticed an armed man in a low hunch sneaking up on him. The criminal was very surprised to pop up looking down the barrel of a gun. As I recall, no shots fired and the criminal set a land speed record fleeing. I have a friend/coworker on the f.d. that had a similar situation happen to him which made him convert to being a ccw holder and become more aware of his surroundings. I remember hearing the news about his ordeal but actually spoke to him about it a few days later and he was more than happy to be alive. He was sitting at a light on his way to our old central station/supplies/warehouse-building-in the later afternoon, which was not in a bad area but did have questionable people there at times. He wasn't paying attention to the area around him as he was preoccupied. While he was sitting at the light someone came into the passenger side of his car and sat down holding a gun to his head. He was then robbed and just before the scum bag left, he pulled the trigger on his gun to kill my friend but it did not go off. He told me he sat there for a moment trying to rationalize what just happened. I don't think they ever caught the scum bag either.

That is a very very bad intersection to be driving through without the benefit of daylight. I'm not sure what her route was, but it pays to go around sometimes. Terrible loss. ________________________________________________ "You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. I am very familiar with that area. It is close to several colleges and a medical center. Sometimes you simply cannot avoid it. On further thought I have been to that Walgreens at that exact intersection at night picking up a prescription for my daughter. That was the drugstore with the LEO behind the counter. My daughter told me to be careful. A friend of mine told me about an MD from the nearby Medical Center nearby who was kidnapped and carjacked. He had a loaded gun, but in the glove box. He managed to get into the glove box, shot the driver in the face and escaped. This was several years ago.

Random, but not entirely. The shooter identified the race of the victim before shooting and chose to proceed on that basis. As sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, that is what happened.

Indeed. She was, IMO, targeted for being white. Elk There has never been an occasion where a people gave up their weapons in the interest of peace that didn't end in their massacre. More of my welcome to MS, no doubt. This young lady was friends with our Exec. Secretary's daughter, who herself just took a job at Baptist Med Center which sits on that corner. To say she's anxious would be a gross understatement. You only have integrity once. - imprezaguy02

Madison is a great area, just a higher cost of living. I've got a few vet friends down that way, if you're looking for leads for your pets. :-) ________________________________________________ "You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom.
