In my other thread about driving to Florida from MA I was planning on leaving at like 3 PM. But now we think we can leave earlier.

Plan is to drive about 8.5 hours, which puts us about Richmond VA. We will have our bicycles on our trailer hitch. I will lock them on somehow but we want to find a hotel that would be fairly safe, well lit, etc.

We can stop before Richmond but probably not very far after depending on how late it is. Any suggestions? Hilton Garden Inn (South, Southpark) is an option the wife just found?

These go to eleven.

Southpark, that is near FT Lee/ Colonial Heights/ Petersburg,
not a horrible area,

personally, I would take 295 around RVA, it will put you out just South of Ashland (better area)

or take 95 in and take 288 and go the long(er) was around nicer area near 288/I64
and in the Midlothian Area (288/US 60)

however, the 95/ rt 10 area is OK, but avoid the City itself, or anywhere from Rt 10 thru 295 north,,, off of 95

FYI, I've stayed at the Courtyard in Stafford, VA many times and felt very safe there. It's Quantico/Marine country. Right around the corner is a restaurant that caters to military/law enforcement. Decent food.

Obviously north of Richmond.

I'm a RVA resident (born and still live south of town) and agree

tonight and tomorrow I am at the Holiday Inn Chantilly (too far off 95 for you) but have stayed in the relatively new one in Dumfries (exit 152 I think) recently,
0 issues,

and when the wife and I go to concerts in DC, we stay at the one in Woodbridge (telegraph rd maybe??, about a block off 95) with 0 issues

Courtyard sounds good. But of course, now we are trying to leave earlier in the day so may end up further south.

And yes we can bring bikes inside. No idea why I didn’t think of that.

Hampton Inn, Ashland, VA.

Take 295 around RVA. Ashland is just north of RVA.

This local will allow you to visit Green top sports. Very large gun store. Right there in Ashland and minutes from the hotel Wink

Unfortunately we will be arriving after 9 pm and leaving at 5 am. No time to explore. We are packing the car with stuff we need in our Florida house but don’t need here in MA.
