Tampa mayor Jane Castor is former Tampa Chief of Police. A quote from the mayor's website sheds some light on the decision to provide Tampa cops with the rainbow LGBTQ badges.

This is for sure! Try watching ANY recent production by the likes of Showtime, NetFlix, etc., and even if it starts out "clean", it will quickly devolve into "in your face" gay this, gay that, trying to make it look normal! Some really good shows have been ruined for me and my wife by this shit, and we stopped watching before conclusion of the series. To see it on police badges is simply WAY too much!!! _____________________________ Bill R. North Alabama

^^^^^^^ This. I was working while my wife was watching a couple of shows she follows. Chicago Fire and maybe Grey's Anatomy, not to sure. I swear, every time I paid attention, they were making a point or referencing a gay couple, either female or male. The acting was horrible and the shit was so unrealistic from an EMS standpoint, I had to stop watching. Niech Zyje P-220 Steve

Badges are not cheap. What a waste of money. They think that badge is making people feel comfortable? Give me a break. NRA Benefactor Life Member

Since the badge represents gays of color, why did they leave out those that are represented by the circle and boomerang on their (whatever it is) flags?

More than likely (or at least, I hope) an officer has to pony up the funds for any non-standard yet approved badge or patch if they want it. I doubt it was purchased by the department and forced on anyone. That being said, a FOI request for all internal communications related to the badge should clear it up. When I retire from my agency I think I'm going to make a hobby out of FOI requests across the nation for this sort of thing. My agency provides the option every year for a "special" badge that has a different look and includes your name, instead of just the number. It as approved for duty use, but it is not issued. If you want it you must pay for it. They also approve I think 3 or 4 different commemorative patches that can be worn at varying points in the year... as I recall there is a patriotic one that is approved for use basically from Memorial Day through July, a Cancer Awareness patch, and a Autism Awareness patch. A member who wishes to partake in those must purchase the patches which is handled through the non-profit K9 Association. And thanks to the City of Tampa for letting us all know what you value. Future vacation planning on my part will reflect your decisions.

Yep, the officers who choose to participate pay for the badges themselves. I have lived in Tampa (been years since I did) and I avoid it like the plague. Fortunately Tampa's airport (truly a diamond in the rough) is located just a bit beyond the end of the bridge over Tampa Bay so I can avoid actually going into that city when going to the airport then scoot west, back over the bridge and into Paradise again. My grandson will be in medical school in Tampa beginning in August. I feel sorry for him. If you're goin' through hell, keep on going. Don't slow down. If you're scared don't show it. You might get out before the devil even knows you're there. NRA ENDOWMENT LIFE MEMBER

Sorry, but we are not slouching towards Gomorrah. We arrived there some time ago. I wonder if those who are pushing this idiocy understand/know what happened to the original Sodom & Gomorrah.
