I'm trying to peek at my social security status. I created an account awhile back. It's telling me know that I need to transition my login method to either login.gov (gov system) or id.me (private system) account. Any recommendations? I'm inclined to use a gov system for gov data but concerned about hacks (how good is the gov security)? But I have concerns about a private system for gov data. And also concerned about hacks. I use id.me and have found it to be seamless. For example, it gets me into the USPTO, the FAA, and Apple's Veteran's Discount Program. It's been a couple of years, but as I recall, it wasn't hard to set up. "I vowed to myself to fight against evil more completely and more wholeheartedly than I ever did before. . . . That’s the only way to pay back part of that vast debt, to live up to and try to fulfill that tremendous obligation." I use login.gov but I also have an ID.ME account and both are relatively simply to setup. I suppose both are as secure as any other system but probably vulnerable to hackers but what system isn't these days???? Bottom line is you're going to have to use one to gain access to your SS status so pick your poison.

If it's really indifferent, then I guess I'll just go w/ login.gov. I'm not comfortable with any system at this point. Seems like even big enterprises with presumably sufficient budgets still get hacked. So, not sure I want to have a private 3rd party be involved unless they have proven better security. I'm using Login.gov, works fine. Advance user tip - if you are signing documents for a corporate entity, you will also have to have a login to do that. Can set that up under a different e-mail but do have to provide SS# at enrollment. Do not, DO NOT!!!! check the box when prompted to link your SSA account to those business login credentials. If you do, your only option will be to get on phone with them and have them delete your login credentials to SSA, and then reset them. Getting a new "code" won't work, trying to change email back won't work, trying to log in through SSA won't work, it's just a general shitshow. On a positive, the IT support lady I spoke with after only 10 minutes on hold was both helpful and pleasant. Hypothetically speaking.... You only have integrity once. - imprezaguy02
