We are remodeling our master bathroom and the boss has assigned me the task of picking out a new toilet. My first thought is ask the folks on the Sig forum. This is actually fun as IMO I get to pick out the most important part. Cool

I'd like to stay $500 or under. What's my number one choice for our number two times?

Thanks for any input.

What's your main concern, comfort, flushing, cleaning, appearance?

Oval/elongated bowls will give you a bigger target with less "overspray," than round bowls, but you need a little more space to fit them in.

Some of the ultra-low-volume flushers have a hard time getting all the product down the tube. Look for a little bigger than the minimum tank size.

Supposedly, there is a Japanese product (Toto?) that is the sine qua non of toilets, but I'm usually happy with the significantly lower cost American Standard line.

Not a plumber, just a user.

Highly recommend this:

I like it a lot and bought based on stellar reviews. Does not come with seat.

I don’t know the specific models, but we have some Kohler’s that even my kids couldn’t clog. The first two have a dual flush lever: one for #1 and the other for #2. I don’t really care about that feature. I’m just happy the plunger stays in the garage. The two new Kohlers seem to flush just as well. I think both models were around $250.

Home Depot has a dual flush Glacier Bay for $99.
The seat sucks but the rest of it is fine.

I replaced ours with American Standard chair height. They were 190. each at lowes. Not hard to do yourself. Get new seals.
Quiet and strong flushes.

.

Get Boss approval on the seat, then work backwards from there...

Hard or padded seat, oversize or standard, white or in some color, silent lid self-closing or drop it with a bang???

For that budget, I doubt you are considering heated vs. ambient temperature seat, a unit with a built-in bidot, or one that conducts medical tests with each deposit you make.

I replaced the two high use toilets in my house as they were constantly needing plunged or snaked, but left the other 2 rarely used builders grade toilets. I installed American Standard Champion 4 (i.e. the one they used to advertise flushing 18 golf balls) after a friend's recommendation.

Zero uses of the plunger or snake since 2019. Nice change from weekly.

I'd buy again.

BTW, the Champion 4 came with soft close toilet seats. A nice feature I didn't know I'd like. The only problem is when I stay with relatives/friends I'm now a toilet seat slammer as I no longer think about gently closing the seat.

Regardless of which toilet you choose, upgrade the seat to a slow close, heated bidet seat. Your boss will worship the ground you walk on. I also recommend the elongated, comfort height in whichever china toilet brand you choose.

PS: I run a wholesale plumbing distributor so I have some idea about such things. :-)

Sorry, I'm stuck in the '70's. Big ole elongated with a 5 gal tank. Wouldn't have it any other way.

Golf balls are for amateurs. Home Depot has a house brand (Glacier Bay) toilet that will handle a bunch of billiard balls.

I'm sure there are many options that will meet your needs. Personally though, I just buy Toto (toilets, sinks, shower heads). And Toto seat (Costco has a good deal on Toto bidets: https://www.costco.com/toto-wa...oduct.100973005.html

I've had the Toto Drake (elongated) for almost 20 years - no complaints. Would buy again.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Yeah, on budget, I'd rather be in the $300 and under range but put $500 here as I'd splurge if it's worth it. We want elongated and not comfort height. The soft close and heated seat ones sound nice but I guess I'd have to get power to it somehow? Don't care about a bidet function either. A buddy of mine had one of those America Standard ones that can flush gold balls. That one seemed really cool. Is Toto the steak of the lake?

Thanks again for all the great input.

She's 5'1", I'm 5'9". We both have short legs. I've had some taller ones in hotels and didn't care for them.

X2 on the American Standard Champion. Had to replace one of the original Mansfields from 94 as one of the grandsons stuffed a toy down and I couldn’t get it out.

Within an hour of replacing it I went back to buy another one to replace the other upstairs one, it was such an improvement. And get the taller one too.
