Not sure if I got a blank canvas or one that has been ripped to shreds. My most ambitious motorcycle project acquisition/parts bike yet
This is hands down the roughest bike I’ve ever bought. From what my friend told me and I trust him it runs and rides and is pretty much all cosmetic. It looks rough enough that it sat in my friends garage and then yard longer than I expected. He’s always buying and selling and I suppose the damage and current state scared all the potential buyers away.
For $500 I figured why the hell not. His price finally fell low enough that I pulled the trigger. I could probably part it out worst case scenario and I guess it’s never bad to have extra parts sitting around if you have the room.
With it missing so many body parts I could build a pretty cool naked bike, street fighter or maybe even a retro style cafe bike.
There is a dystopian zombie themed motorcycle rally In Indianapolis every year. It might be a fun bike to throw a headlight on and take to Indy.

I think if you simply connect the blue thing with the gray thing on that loom, it'll fire right up.

To me the handlebars look like it is/was set up as a cafe bike. Please post photos of your progress.

I could see how that would scare away a buyer. Looks like a wrecked bike in that state.
Cafe/scrambler/streetfighter would be a fun direction.
Wish there were some cheap, clean title projects around here that I could stumble into.

From the one photo, it looks like it's in decent shape frame and wiring wise. That Scotts damper is $400 or so new, so I think you got a decent parts bike anyway.
By the way, you know why the Scotts dampers are gold colored? Because that's how much they cost and how much they're worth! (groan)

Yeah, there is no way I’m going to rebuild the bike back to stock. It’s going to be a streetfighter, scrambler, or cafe racer.

I'd be looking for it's twin with a blown motor for cheap and just swap body parts.
I recently bought a perfect 2008 KLR650 with 9K but a bad motor from a co-worker for $700. In perfect condition except head was shot because he ran it low on oil and the cams became grinders in the head. Not knowing crap about engines, he sold it to me for cheap. $500 for a good used complete head (all parts including cams, valves, etc.) and about $700 for a newly bored cylinder and bigger bore piston kit, and I have a dual sport bike that will be better than when it was new. Around here, used KLR's in good condition are going for >$3500 so I will still be ahead if I sell it.
Actually tonight is going to be the 1st startup once I get home! Pretty excited. It feels good to bring something considered dead back to life.

That’s awesome XerO! You are absolutely correct. It is a wonderful feeling when you hear the engine start for the first time on a project bike that was once written off, and left for dead.

Time will tell as you get it rebuilt. If everything stays straight and true this would be an excellent track bike. Keep us posted on your progress.

Got my previously dead KLR650 up and running! Started 1st try with that new 685 piston! Coupled with a carb KLX needle kit and it's even better. Hope you get yours going! That's my daughter thinking she was cool since she got to be the 1st passenger.
