It’s Summer! Time for tomato sandwiches!

Pipe SmokerIt’s Summer! Time for tomato sandwiches!
It’s early in the summer, but I found a nice heirloom tomato at Whole Foods yesterday and made my first tomato sandwich of 2023. Dang, it was so good!
Here’s an interesting 4:47 YouTube video by Kenji Lopez showing how he makes tomato sandwiches:
https://youtu.be/Oc-R1hOrNowMy method is much different, but that’s OK. When it comes to food, each cat in his own bag, I say. One thing Kenji and I agree on: lots of mayo!
Likely I’ll get flamed for lack of bacon. I like Ts (tomato sandwiches), and BTs (bacon & tomato sandwiches). But BLTs – not so much. Lettuce doesn’t earn the space it occupies IMO. As it is, my tomato sandwiches are so loaded that I have to eat ’em over the sink to collect fall out.

ssebread, mayo, tomato, S+P, sliced cheddar

rat2306I'm with you on that, sse; but will use Asiago cheese. Thanks for the great lunch idea!

ARmanTomato sammichs. Portland Round Steak <fried or not> (bologna) cheese and mayonnaise, tomato sammichs. Your standard ol' BLT. BLT+ that's with cheese. Yes please!
Love them all....
I didn't plant any garden or tomatoes this year, but the neighbor has a nice garden and told me that they have more than enough tomatoes (if there were ever such a thing?), so she said that I'll be getting some. I can't wait!

A tomato sandwich has only 5 ingredients IMO:
Dead ripe summer tomatoes
Bread: I like Martin’s Potato bread
Mayo: preferably Duke’s
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
If people are flaming you for “lack of bacon” then they don’t know anything about a true tomato sandwich.

I agree with this. To add, you need to make sure you get some good, stick on your teeth type bread.

Jersey tomatoes are the best for tomato sandwiches!

architectPicked my first real tomato last Wed., a small one that redm but not quite fully ripe, but was in ground contact, been getting cherries for a couple of weeks. Very early for the DC area, we usually get our first right around Independence Day. You can bet the BLT's and pretty much every other sammitch that hosts a tomato will be in profusion in a couple of weeks.

We picked our first tomato last week. I picked 6 more yesterday. In a few weeks, we'll have more than we can eat.

That is NOT Bread...If you think that's bread, you are shopping in the wrong part of the store!

selogicIf you want bacon on your tomato sandwich , then do it .Ignore the food snobs .

ssethe classic tomato sandwich is as indicated, nothing else. the brands of the ingredients are secondary, it's all about the tomato. any vine-ripened, homegrown tomato in the dead of Summer is sublime
on a related matter, I'm a proponent of lettuce > iceberg lettuce > on a sandwich or burger > the crunch is fresh and delicious. Still it doesn't belong on a tomato sanger. if that is being a snob suck it

tatortoddIf you don't state the brand of mayo, how can we know if it tasted good?

While I agree with you on the tomato, respectfully, it's Dukes Mayo.

June 24, 2023, 11:22 AM
sseIn my neck of the woods Duke's only became available in the last year or two. I've used a lot of it, but it's so different it's almost a different condiment.

If you lived further south like me you'd be eating them in early June. Homegrown Rutgers Tomatoes and basil made into marinara 2 weeks ago:
