Big Brother to put an end to speeding in NY
Did the article happen to mention when the NY State Pre-Crimes Bureau will be online?

I mean they might as well go for it!

Never been to NY . Never plan on going . This means I'll never have to worry about ANY of their stupid laws .

These and other systems can't anticipate every situation or gauge the individual needs of the driver. I singled this one out because you may want to hit a pedestrian, in this case rioters or carjackers.

Even as a retired LEO, I can think of several ways this is a bad idea. Just like I think auto braking is bad. I had an Audi that locked the brakes on me several times while taking avoidance maneuvers. Thank God no one was behind me, or I would have gotten hit, which was why I was changing lanes to begin with, to AVOID a wreck.

Years ago one of our horses was suffering from Thrush. I went to the farm store to pick up a bottle of iodine with which to treat the horse. I had to fill out a state form and sign my name before I could purchase the product. I joked with the person helping me by stating “someday the government is going to be putting tags in our ears.” He laughed.

Someday is getting close.

This is one thing negative about electric cars. This type of system is simple to setup with electric vehicles.

Eric Adam’s agreed. This settles it.

You mean beside the facts it would be a violation of federal law, would be difficult to limit to the one vehicle, would negatively impact navigation and other fully-legitimate functions such as music streaming, would also affect non-driving passengers, and would eliminate legitimate location tracking?

No reason. No reason at all.

As for New York states nifty new idea: Frack 'em. I have no plans to go into or anywhere near NYS again, anyway.

Im thinking a smart phone is smart enough to render the screen black at some arbitrary speed, say 10 mph. Navigation would remain unaffected.

So basically, only New Yawk residents would be affected; drivers from surrounding states or passing through would be unaffected. People from the state will likely be ecstatic that folks from Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, etc keep blowing by them while laying on the horn.

You'll notice that this steaming pile of dung was dreamed up by the staff of a Senator representing New York City. I'm sure he and his staff are elitists who seldom leave the City and have no clue how this would affect the unwashed masses north of Yonkers who actually have to own cars and drive to live their lives.

I can imagine being on a 75mph freeway, with a 45mph frontage & the system miscalculating that you've magically jumped onto the frontage & abruptly arresting your speed.

My truck has the Speed Sign OCR feature, and there are a few places in town where the kids painted the 45mph signs to say 15, and turn 35mph into 85.
My truck recognizes the altered signs and shows them on the dash. Eek

Welcome to even more ridiculous traffic jams as people are no longer unable to pass other people and everyone has to slow down to merge, which compounds until the entire state of NY resembles a parking lot after a football game ends.

They voted for their government, let them live with it. Just keep that shit there, stop moving to Florida.

I don’t like the idea of using a system like that. Cars need to be made simpler. Way way simpler. I do like the idea of forcing folks into at least vaguely complying with speed limits. That should be done with citations, fines, and seizure for noncompliance. It’s obvious that many if not all traffic jambs are created by one incident. I believe that incident is assholes flying up and inserting themselves into a situation that is already at capacity.
Follow traffic flow of your lane. You don’t need to be the fastest asshole because you will never be “in front”.

Why not lower the speed limit to 15 mph across the state? Surely that would reduce traffic deaths.

In other news, I predict this will result in a massive [black] market for GPS jammers. That'll end well.

I would love for the auto makers to just give a big FU to these overreaching states. Dont follow CA emission standard and simply dont sell cars to CA. It would take a matter of days maybe weeks for the politician to be roasted when you cant buy a car anywhere in the state.

People confuse speed with safety. You can be driving very fast and be doing so safely. You could also be driving slowly and being very dangerous.

Overall people will drive at a safe speed. You could eliminate every speed limit sign, and the vast majority of people would carry on the same as they currently are.

I am a proponent of ticketing dangerous drivers, which would reduce accidents. I am not a proponent of ticketing speeders, as that seems mostly geared to increase government revenue. In fact, I think money could be removed from tickets entirely (if the premise is that tickets should be used to promote safety). Just revamp the point system, and increase the penalties for driving on a suspended/revoked license.
