Didn't see this discussed before now, it happened on Nov 8th. I don't know what preceded the punching, but this woman was throwing haymakers at this 16yr old.

My understanding is that the hit the teacher prior to video rolling.

That woman throws a mean punch! Looks to me as though she has settled a few arguments in the past this way. So who pays for substitute teacher violence, the school district?

WOW. That really looks bad. The kid was apparently a special-ed kid. Even if she had attempted to hit the teacher, the kid was sitting down. That kick to the back of the head --- attempted murder?

Shea Rhames' daughter was in the room that day. “She said the teacher came in and was being aggressive and cussing. She told everybody to shut the f*** up. At that point the other student said something along the lines of "make me" and that's when the teacher went toward the student and aggressed her,” said Rhames. Her daughter took this video, which shows the teacher making some kind of contact with the student before the girl slaps back. “She said the teacher choked the student first and that is when the student went to push the teacher away,” said Rhames.

Yeah, she's going to jail. NOTHING I can think of would justify that behavior and level of force (and I say that knowing we don't know what happened immediately before that video clip).
Even after the student was on the ground, the 'teacher' stomped her on the head. I can see no possible way this can be explained as 'self defense' or 'reasonable force.'

Bitch needs prison time, right fucking now. When she's done, she needs to be barred from any job working with children. Shit, I want to beat her twice as bad as she did that girl just watching it. She needs a fucking stomping, badly.
I had something similar happen in Catholic school. Young black female teacher's assistant got pissed at me and a buddy tossing pieces of Oreo cookie to each other in the back of the class and rather than use words like a human being, she hoisted up both of us by our shirts and dragged us to the door and shoved us through it. The problem was, the door was shut and she slammed me into the doorknob a good three times before she opened it and shoved us out though it. Being ten, there wasn't much I could do about it. We filed a police report for assault and pressed charges. The Catholic School refused to fire her (only young black woman on the staff) and they instead invited us to find another school for the next session. My best buddy was black, and his grandmother who was raising him told him he'd better dare not back a little white boy's story that could get a young black woman fired. Learned a lot of things out of that incident. It was my white privilege to take that abuse and be told to shut up and like it. Of course, this was in El Paso a year or two after the L.A. riots.

I have substitute taught and taught in schools I know that some kids are abusive towards teachers. But this type of assault towards a student is not the way you handle it! Punches to the face, kick to the head, nope! You can defend yourself by restraining the student if you have no way to get distance between you and the student. It appears at the time the punches were thrown by the substitute teacher the student was seated not aggressive. You call in help from the office and have the student removed.

Can you imagine a 'teacher' doing that to your kid? I would lose my mind.
And I'm not one to take the student's side, generally. Many students are nothing but trouble and sometimes even dangerous. I support classroom discipline and consequences.
What I saw on that video was neither. She's in a world of trouble and deserves all of it.

I tend to believe that the world wouldn’t be any worse off for a little corporal punishment, though I’d think it better coming from the parents if possible. I got my share in school, and it did me nothing but good. Better to learn the old saw, “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.” at a younger age, from educators, than when older from Law Enforcement and the criminal justice system.
However, that was nothing like corporal punishment, that was a savage attack. If someone lived in a state where it was legal to carry in schools, happened upon that going down, and shot the teacher to stop the deadly assault, I’d be more inclined to give them a medal that charge them with anything.
