The laptop doesn't have an optical (CD/DVD) player, so I got an external device which therefore needs a driver installed to operate. What does the hive use for this? Need something that will play everything, including Blu-Ray & HD audio. Thanks. This an USB DVD drive? What operating system are you running? Windows, OSX, Linux? I assume windows, if so what version? Also assuming windows, do you at least see the device listed when you connect it to your computer? ('Windows key + e' will open up explorer, then you can select 'This PC' and see your current devices and drives.)

Yes, USB (3.0 & -C) connections. Windows 10, device is recognized in the list. "Common sense is wisdom with its sleeves rolled up." -Kyle Farnsworth "Freedom of Speech does not guarantee freedom from consequences." -Mike Rowe "Democracies aren't overthrown, they're given away." -George Lucas

I have a Old USB Video adaptor that goes off the radar and becomes unrecognized in Device Manager under USB Controllers. The trick I've used is to Delete it and Power Down. Upon Power Up it is discovered during New Devices Found by Windows 10. I have tried many different techniques to reinstall drivers but to no avail.

You don't need a driver for W10 (built-in). You may need a Codec for Blu-Ray and other Movies though, usually a paid program. Additionally, the drive may not show up (hidden) in the File Explorer until it is loaded with a disc. Can you read regular data disks?

You could install VLC and it should be able to play any of your DVDs. It's free. VLC Media Player More options mentioned Here

Another thing you can do is make an .iso copy of the dvd. Then VLC can mount the virtual dvd file and play it. Then you physically don't need the dvd player. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." VLC, Handbrake, and MakeMKV should pretty much take care of your DVD viewing, ripping, and converting needs.

If you find something VLC can't play due to encryption, try K-lite codec pack + media player classic. I get it from ninite.com - just check a box & it will download an installer that works in the background (it will install as many programs as you choose in the background, no nag screens). Every fresh install of windows gets a ninite for 7zip/chrome/thunderbird/notepad++ etc.
