Police response under investigation after video surfaces of Raleigh fight involving guns, man swinging machete

https://www.cbs17.com/news/loc...an-swinging-machete/

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — An investigation is underway after Raleigh police were called to break up a fight Friday afternoon in which guns were drawn, and a man was seen swinging a machete.

“We were really disappointed with the police presence because nobody got out of their car,” said a witness who asked to remain anonymous. “No questions were asked. No statements were asked.”

A Raleigh city leader spoke about the issue.

“It’s something that’s not acceptable,” said Raleigh City Councilman Corey Branch.

After watching video of the Bragg Street incident Sunday afternoon, Branch reached out to leaders within the Raleigh Police Department looking for one thing.

“A thorough investigation to be addressed to see how the response to the matter was handled, and if there have been some areas that weren’t handled appropriately that will be addressed,” said Branch.

“Witness accounts change over time,” said the anonymous witness. “Folks who may have been passionate at that time about speaking out may feel differently two or three days later.”

Three days after the incident, Raleigh police have a noticeable presence with squad cars on each end of the block, and at least one officer walking the sidewalk.

The residents CBS 17 spoke with off-camera say this is the response they were seeking.

“There was no blood drawn by anyone, thank God,” said Branch.

As a full investigation gets underway CBS 17 reached out to Raleigh police to get their side of the story, but despite multiple attempts, they have yet to respond to our request.

At least one witness says Raleigh police stopped by his house offering an apology.

“There were folks with guns,” said a witness. “Bullets don’t care who’s in their path.”

“As things warm up hopefully we can get tempers to cool down,” said Branch.

I’m not very familiar with Raleigh but I’m sure this was one of the finer neighborhoods where the accountants were disagreeing with the physicians over the pending tax day and the attorneys spoke up instigating this minor misunderstanding.

“No statements were asked”? That “witness” must be a rocket surgeon. I’m wondering, when he or she spoke to the reporter, if they used the word “axed” instead of “asked”. Roll Eyes

Looks like a dance party. Nobody got shot or cut or knocked out or arrested so what's the big deal? If the cops rolled in and put faces on asphalt and frisked people and ran warrants the council creep would surely complain about the unjust actions and bemoan the presence of an occupying force. Can't have it both ways.

So now they are complaining that the police didn't shoot someone or 'oppress' them? Isn't that what they've been wanting?

This is what “the community” asked for, they got it. More and more cops nationwide should just stay in their car, let the neighbors hash it out.

The leftist trash wanted less police police presence and intervention. They sue the police for showing up and taking the action the situation demands they take. They have programmed the savages to attack law enforcement instead of complying. What did they expect a small handful of officers to do? Perhaps this is one of those times the social workers dipshit DemocRATS insist should be utilized should have been sent instead.

The subculture of violence manifests itself for everyone to see, but the assholes want to blame the police. I wonder what Raleigh would look like today had the officers gone in and busted a cap on the guy with the machete, or the guy with the gun? It looks like two rival factions, how many of those guys would the officers have to fight, and the scenario has high probability of shots being fired. I think the officers made the correct decision to stand by. I am sure the officers would have responded more aggressively had blood been drawn. Or maybe they should have sent in a few social workers to quell the conflict...

Update below. Chief (who is a lame-duck admin -- has already filed paperwork to retire in 2 weeks) is very upset and pledges a full investigation.

Raleigh police chief ‘quite concerned’ by video showing fight involving guns, man swinging machete
Wake County News

https://www.cbs17.com/news/loc...an-swinging-machete/

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Raleigh’s police chief has said there will be a thorough investigation after she said her officers did not do their part in responding to several 911 calls reporting street fights on March 12.

CBS 17 was contacted by a concerned resident who said they were disappointed in the police department’s response to the fights on Bragg Street on Friday afternoon.

“No questions were asked. No statements were asked,” the resident said.

CBS 17 obtained multiple videos of the fights where at least one person was armed with a gun and another person had a machete.

A Bragg Street resident said they contacted Raleigh City Councilman Corey Branch about the police response.

“It’s something that’s not acceptable,” said Branch.

Following Branch’s comment, Raleigh Police Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown released a statement concerning her officer’s response to the 911 calls.

“For the past several years, I have been calling on the community to do their part in helping keep our city safe by reporting suspicious and criminal activity as soon as they are aware of it,” Deck-Brown said.

The chief said the community did their part on Friday by reporting the fights.

“However, it appears that we did not reciprocate in service to those calls,” Deck-Brown said.

She said officers were called to the 600 block of Bragg Street at 4:13 p.m.

An hour later, 911 calls were made reporting fighting near the same location.

One caller said “all hell was breaking loose” on Bragg Street. Callers reported between 15 and 30 people being involved.

Deck-Brown said the fights are under criminal investigation.

“Based on what I have heard so far, the residents who called 911 did exactly what they should have done by reporting unlawful activity and I am grateful to them,” Deck-Brown said. “I would emphasize that this is not a true reflection of the great relationships we have worked hard to forge with our community.”

One caller contacted 911 multiple times – the second time calling the incident a “small riot” and reporting a man had been wielding a machete but left and went into a neighboring house.

“You guys have two cops out here just sitting around doing nothing,” the caller said. “We would like some police to come out here and take some statements, knock on doors and take out video from us. Because they’re not accepting the video we have.”

The chief said a full internal investigation will be conducted.

“I was quite concerned by what I saw, and I pledge that it will be thorough and will follow wherever the facts lead. It will be most important to determine how this occurred and what we can do better,” Deck-Brown said.

Probably a situation where someone would get shot by a cop of a different color. Said cops probably didn't want to have to deal with the fallout.

Not an unreasonable assumption, on your part or the LEO's involved.

I also hope they find a different profession, or leave the city. If you can't do your job, you shouldn't be there.

Perhaps the officers were deescalating the situation by their presence. Isn't that what so much of the public wants officers to do? I'm of the same opinion as HayesG. on this one.

Chief needs to investigate why the culture of his department is one where officers feel pressured to stand by, instead of arrest bad actors. Or more likely appropriate...investigate the DA that all too often pours gasoline on these situations while ignoring true criminals.

I'm curious as well.
There's a pretty good chance this incident had a BETTER ending because they didn't get involved.
