This is a video of a Samoan firefighting crew singing a song of praise thanks to God for His protection. Not only are they good singers, but the spirit of their song really touched my heart.
The news article says the tune is called "Fa’afetai i le Atua," which translates to "thank God in heaven."
The language is Samoan, but the tune that they're singing is a Mormon hymn: "Israel, Israel, God is Calling".

The same melody is used for "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" a very popular hymn among Lutherans when I was a kid.
Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

That's beautiful. A gift that keeps on giving, from the missionaries to Samoa. There is another of their videos on YouTube, singing in Samoan the tune I know as "Hawaii Aloha".
I must say I really love a men's chorus. "Muscular Christianity" was once a thing in this country.
PHPaul, when we were kids Lutherans--and Presbyterians and Methodists--still sang hymns. No longer, apparently.

BTW deepocean, one of my favorite Psalms is 104, that includes these lines:

As a young whipper snapper I have to say that I much prefer hymns to modern praise music. That being said there are still some churches that do both. My Baptist church has an excellent mixture of old with new.

Along about 1980, the Lutheran Church (LCMS) completely changed the liturgy I had known and loved since I was in diapers. Also changed the hymnal with new hymns and actively discouraged the singing of the old favorites. Most were not even included in the new hymnals.
Shallow of me perhaps, but that pissed me right off and is a big part of the reason I drifted away from the church. It was just unrecognizable.

Still go to a fairly large traditional Lutheran Church here which still sings a lot of the old songs, although mixed in with a quite a few that I don't know or care for. Daughter goes to a huge Lutheran Church here that is all contemporary. Not for me!

Thank you for sharing this. I have read and appreciated your comments of faith every time you have posted them in LBJ's thread and other places here. I also appreciate the faithful comments of others here.
