I visited the Ilion NY museum a few years ago. https://www.uticaod.com/news/2...s-laying-off-workers Remington Arms laying off workers By Amy Neff Roth Posted Mar 12, 2019 at 12:01 AM Updated at 8:37 AM Remington Arms is laying off 200 workers, some of them in Ilion, according to the Ilion mayor. Mayor Brian Lamica said the Remington plant manager called him Monday to give him a head’s up about the layoffs, which will be spread across Remington plants in Ilion; Huntsville, Alabama; and Lonoke, Arkansas. The first notices were handed out during Monday’s first shift, but the plant manager wasn’t sure how many of the layoffs would be in Ilion, Lamica said. “Any time we hear anything negative going on over at Remington, it’s painful for the village,” he said. “What a lot of people don’t understand is that before there was a village, there was Remington. Remington Arms is why we’re here. They’re a big part in a lot of families’ lives over the years.” The firm has had layoffs in the past, but had been hiring recently, Lamica said. “They just recently went through and hired some. They called back everyone who wanted to come back in the past year. ... So apparently there’s just something in the market that caused (the layoffs).” Remington Arms emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last May. It furloughed some of its Ilion workers in October 2017 and had laid off Ilion workers earlier that year – 55 in September and 122 in March. In 2014, it laid off 105 workers in Ilion in August and 126 in November. Lamica said he hopes the layoffs will be minimal this time. “Our motto here in the village is “Home of Remington,” he said, “And I’d like to see it stay that way for a long time to come.”

Well, if Remington tried to actually make quality guns like they used to then they wouldn’t be in this mess. Hopefully they will get it together and recover, if not then oh well. screw em.

Not in my personal experience. When I decided I wanted a 1911 it turned out one of my LGS' had a Remington 1911 R1 Enhanced, used, but never been fired. I asked a friend who's a 1911 nut about it. His reply: "Possibly the best production 1911 on the market. Might even be better than some semi-custom 1911s." Spent the evening researching it thoroughly, because I recalled reading negative comments about it. The only negative comments I could find were "Remington sucks because triggers," "Remington's not long for this world" and one actual criticism of the product, itself: The finish may not be all that robust. Every last reviewer I read loved the thing. Every last owner review I could find was positive. So I acquired it. Fit, finish and function are flawless. I had one problem on my first range trip: It wouldn't strip the first round of a fully-loaded mag with one of the two included mags. The other mag (which had spent >24 hours loaded) worked perfectly--as did my buddy's 8-round Wilson mag. Can it shoot? Oh, it can shoot, all right. First two targets: All the targets from that day are like those. The outliers are my fault, btw. It'd been 18 months since I last went to the range, so I'm a bit rusty. I can hunt-down some of the targets for my Remington 700P, that shoots 1/2 MOA with FGMM at 100 yards, if y'all like. Day in, day out. (If I do my part.) Then there's my Remington Sportsman 12 pump shotgun, essentially an economy 870, which has never failed me. So say what you want about Remington: The Remington products I own have been great. Partial dichotomy |
Being gun owners, I would think we'd rather be upset that they are having lay offs and wonder if it had to do with anti-gun news.....of which there's never any shortage of. Yeah, Remington has had issues, but damn. I don't see piling on them will help.

I shot my 1st partridge with my Grandfathers Model 17 pump 20 gage. It was a light and fast shot gun. Made 1917 to '21. His Model 510 Target Master was a extremely accurate single shot .22. Had a 510 P in later years, basically the same rifle. One 870 TC Trap, another with slug barrel and there are still 2 Model 1100s in the family. Shot my 1st Pennsylvania buck with a ADL. Got some shooting time on a friends BDL in .300 Win. mag. My 540X .22 Target rifle was like a laser on targets. Lastly, my 40X .22 prone match rifle would nearly shoot the same hole at 50 yard line. I never had a single issue with any of those Remington firearms. Only thing I can think of which would have improved the lot is had I been able to acquire a new 3200 OU.

To all of you who are serving or have served our country, Thank You |
Remington needs badly to improve their quality. For startes Remington should retain a few of those workers and spend a few minutes per gun to polish the chamber in many of their gun models especially their shotguns. A nice chamber finish will always enhance reliability in a gun. I've never see guns from HK, Glock, the Italians with a poor chamber finish. Yet it is so common on many Remingtons except their 1911. They used have the barrels for their 1911 made by the aftermarket and generally the Rem 1911 have a nice chamber finish.

Not really a valid assumption. So many factors go into a business and really only making a profit is the primary thing that counts.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong about the following. Many of the old firearms manufactures have been bought out by a venture capital company that installs their own management team and then loans the manufacture money. The management team then hires "consultants" at exorbitant rates from the venture capital company that tell the manufacture that they have to cut cost which in reality means reduce quality. So the firearms manufacturer rides along on it's brand name until people finally realize they are putting out crap. Then sales fall off and the manufacturer files for bankruptcy. The venture capital company then takes a tax write-off for the bad dept after raking in all the management fees. In effect, what these venture capital companies are doing is sucking the value out of the brand name that was built up over many decades or in some cases more than a century.

Sad to see this. My Step-Father has an old 870 Wingmaster and I have an 870 Marine Magnum. I know many here have not cared for some of the more recent Remingtons. I just hate to see this happen to a generations old company. Niech Zyje P-220 Steve

Sorry to hear of their issues, but the very cheapest guns out there shoot as well or better than those we purchased 5 years ago. Rifles from most makers are 20-30% less now, with better barrels and triggers. TC, Ruger, Howa and others are producing shooters for very competitive prices. That said, I love my Remmy 700's. The last, purchased about 5 years ago, is the .308 R700 SPS Tactical with 20" barrel and gumby stock. $400.00 on sale, impressive accuracy, and even better with a B&C on a Stockys's sale. It joins the several other of it's brethren that have pleased me and others.

Sad to read this. Besides the 1911, their recent pistol offerings have been lack luster. As for rifles, i just dont know enough about them to really give an opinion. I think we will see more of this this year. Anecdotallty new gun sales seem to be slow. Used guns are not moving much faster. It has been a few years since i have seen anything come out of the industry trade shows that excites me. Last time was the mpx. I would love to see some of the smith gen 3 semi auto custom shop guns come back. Walther's new steel gun looks nice, beretta's new steel gun looks good. I dont know what the solution is.

If the VCs run it into the ground, then perhaps some skilled persons can purchase the company for a low cost. Perhaps this is a modern cycle, starting with the VC's draining all the capital they can. Savage has been sold a few times, and currently the company is being run correctly and profitably. -c1steve
