My reason for posting this is because I was stuck in the resultant traffic jam, about 3-4 miles back from the accident scene, for 3½ hours. https://www.wjhl.com/news/moto...s-in-hamblen-county/

By the time I got up to the accident scene, the RV was gone, but the remains of the Bronco were still there. It was gutted from floor to roof, even partially melting the tires. This is a rural interstate and I'm guessing the fire units came from Morristown (which the interstate does not run through), a good 20-25 miles away.

A few years ago that Happened to good friends of ours. Took their Class A motorhome to a dealer in Tucson for maintenance before heading north for the summer. After picking up the RV, North of Tucson on I-10 motorhome home and towed burnt to a crisp. Transmission line disconnected and sprayed Transmission fluid on the manifold. He saw the smoke in his rear view mirrors. The couple, their two Golden Retrievers and their fireproof box with valuable stuff and papers survived.

The high $$$ towed campers you see being dragged around here in the Yoop occasionally suffer some type of crash or other problem. The resultant aftermath looks like someone detonated a small nuke in the camper and the cleanup shuts things down for quite a while.
More tourism fun!

About 10 years ago I was at work in Portland and got a phone call from a police officer. My parents had been on their way out to the coast for the weekend, towing their mid-size camp trailer. The trailer started swaying and they lost control of it. It dragged their Expedition into the cement wall alongside the highway, and the trailer basically disintegrated. No fire and nobody got hurt, but they were a little too shook up to make the phone call. When I got there an hour or so after the incident, there was debris from the trailer all over the highway. A crew had pushed enough of it off to the side to re-open two of the four traffic lanes. It took several more hours to get it all cleaned up and the trailer carcass removed.

Been there!

A bunch of years ago I was invited to go to the beach with a friend and his family. They were taking their camper (28-30', if I remember right), towing it with a Jeep Grand Wagoneer. (The old-school big one.)

We barely got out of town limits before the whole setup began to fishtail and ended up upside down. I remember hitting the seat belt release and falling down -- onto the ceiling of the Jeep. It was mostly unharmed, but the camper was an absolute mess.

I-81 makes I-95 look magnificent , traffic wise, I have a friend that lives near Draper and there is always some tomfoolery on 81 between him and Harrisonburg it seems,

they should have made that highway 3 or 4 lanes long long ago

Without going into too much detail, being stuck that long with no place to "go" presented a dilemma for a few people. I also wished for some water.

Have a Blue Ox weight distribution and anti-sway tow hitch. Very nice piece of equipment; it was really helpful in towing an RV in unexpected bad weather.

I've seen stupidity on I-81 but still prefer it to the New Jersey to Richmond run on I-95

A well setup Blue Ox is really nice. Enough truck is good too.

We are heading out next Saturday with our Class A, towing a Jeep Rubicon for our trip to Canada. Something like this can happen while on the road. But the number of incident like this is very small, compared to the number of motorhomes or RV being pulled by a vehicle on the road. When Im driving, I make it a habit to look at my side mirrors and rear camera (to see the Jeep being towed) very often. If something like this ever happen to us, the number one priority is our safety and survival, that goes to our furry baby (female Jindo dog). I carry several fire extinguishers. If I can put out the fire, I will try. But RVs burns very fast because the house is made mostly of wood. If I can disconnect the Jeep, I will try. If I can’t, as long as we are safe, the RV and towed vehicle can be replaced.

Best incident I ever saw, a customer at our resort pulls in with his motorhome, comes in to the office to register and looks out the window at his motorhome. WHERE'S MY F#@$&+G TRUCK!. Somewhere east of Benson Arizona on I-10 he lost his towed truck. He left, never saw him again.

It's getting more difficult to replace the good ones. They just don't make them anymore.

Of course, getting Cummins parts for a 99 ISC 350hp motor is getting difficult also.

The additional traffic from I-40 restricted lanes makes it worse.
