We are going to Autorama this weekend. Michigan honors Ohio resident CCW. I can not find anything on the COBO website indicating whether or not carrying is permitted. It would appear it would NOT be in the arena because of the seating. Anyone have good info on this? Thanks

Michigan law states that you can not carry in an entertainment venue that has seating for over 2,500. Last time I was at an auto show at COBO hall there was no seating, but well over 2,500 people there. I don't know what to tell you. I suspect that the no carry law in over 2,500 seating was to keep you from carrying in a large crowd of people. I am not an expert on the law nor do I play one on TV. Smile

Contact the venue, see if they have a carry policy and if they have metal detectors if so you'll need to bring your Glock 7 Razz

Just talked to PD and they didn't know. Said COBO hall was a private establishment and they couldn't speak for them. Thanks HRK, I called and everyone too busy to talk. I will try email and if that doesn't get a response I will call again. Thanks guys.

From 2014, but probably still the status: Is The North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) In Detroit A Pistol Free Zone?

Excerpt of the more pertinent portion:
quote:

According to Mr. Berry the prohibition of weapons is explicitly stated on the back of the ticket and that purchasers implicitly agree to not bring their guns when they buy a ticket. Also, the gun ban is prominently posted on the doors.

Personally, unless they had metal detectors or pat-downs at the entrances, I wouldn't worry about it. Or, put another way: I'd be more concerned about the possible need for my defensive firearm in Detroit than I would the auto show's policies.

My solution is to avoid the question entirely: I simply don't go into Detroit for anything other than absolutely necessary, unavoidable reasons. Period.

To those that might respond "That area of Detroit is heavily-policed and relatively safe" I respond "True, but the areas through which you must travel to get there and back aren't so much."

ETA: My wife used to subscribe to the "that area's safe" school of thought. I used to respond "Yeah, but the areas through which you have to travel to and from there aren't." She wasn't buying it. So one time, after going somewhere in Detroit we had to go, I took a very slight detour on the way back, just outside our main route incoming. She no longer asks to go to places in Detroit Wink

IIRC COBO is a public/private entity which currently falls under the OC loophole under Michigan preemption laws. You can OC, but you cannot CC.

(Again IIRC. The public/private entities try to state that they're private, but they're actually partially funded and managed by public funds, so they fall under the public venue, which cannot bar OC, by law.)

IANAL in MI or anywhere.

If carrying OWB and you have a jacket on, do you need a sign to point to your Open Carry.

I hate decisions like that - I've seen public lockers at some entrances - Hate that too as well as a walk back to the car.

Hard to be a good guy now a days.

OWB ≠ open carry. If it's not in plain sight, it's concealed.

They have had sporadic metal detecting wands at the larger international car show along with bag inspections.
