| Savor the limelight |
My daughter just sent me this picture:  She and my wife will be landing soon. I’m already at the hotel after driving her stuff 1,250 miles in 18 hours over the last two days. By this time tomorrow, I’ll have helped her move into her dorm room, assembled a few pieces of furniture, hung a few posters, and be well on my way back to Florida. I’ve changed my mind, she should go to UF. I’m not ready for this.  | ||

My oldest turns 15 on Monday...luckily she's a homebody, for now, and doesn't want to go far for college. The Enemy's gate is down. | |||

I well remember moving my daughter into UNC. My wife and her were already there while I drove an old work van loaded with all her things. Closest parking to the dorm was around 150 yards away, her room was on the third floor, and it was sunny, 95 degrees, and 90% humidity. I've never sweat so much in my life. No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride. | |||

I gave my kids a metaphorical compass and told them, 2 hour drive circle from home. In western PA, there are many great colleges and universities within that ring. Ultimately, one wiggled beyond that for medical school. Some kids just really have their hearts set on a program, school campus or city. She'll do fine, and she'll be fine. Best wishes! | |||

I feel your pain. Dropped my only biological son off 2 weeks ago. I have a step son, but he is much older, left long ago, and lives in Tokyo. So far, my wife and I hear from him regularly, and he is doing well. Knowing that he is happy makes it a lot easier on us. Sadly for me, his Parent's Weekend conflicts with something I have to do, so I will not see him for a few more months. This space intentionally left blank. | |||

My wife and I went through this, three times; 2011, 2012, and 2014, all out of state. The first was the most difficult. The other to, less so. All three went to the same college. Our oldest, the first to go was there the longest, 2 BS, 2 MS, and a PHD. It was good they had each other for support and we could visit at the same time. Now, one live in Alaska, one in California, and the other 25 miles away in Richardson. | |||

We recently dropped my daughter off at the University of Vermont for her freshman year. About six hours away from us. After seeing how happy and excited she is to be there, and how quickly she is bonding with her roommate and other students, knowing that she is in a program that she is passionate about, it is comforting for me to know that she is in the ‘right place’ for her. I don’t have any kids. That being said, I was the youngest of 5 kids. When my time came for college my parents pulled up to the Dorm and let me out of the car. I got my suitcase out and my parents gave me a hug and said bye son. They didn’t even come to my dorm room and never did. That was it and I was basically on my own. It was great! Our 3 children all attended in state private colleges here in Michigan. Our daughter did her Masters in London. That said, it's 12 hours in state to one of the colleges that was on the youngest's short list. He instead chose a school 2.5 hours away. It will be fine. __________________________ Writing the next chapter that I've been looking forward to. | |||

Honestly, we moved my son into his first off campus apartment last weekend and it was no big deal. He forgot a few things, but being only 90 miles away he drove home and back to get them the same day. Even helping him move in his freshman year was no big deal. With my daughter, I’ve been the one for years reassuring my wife that this is the right thing for our baby girl. My daughter is ready, but I can’t believe I’m about to leave her here. | |||
