Say what you will about cats, but dogs are amazing

GustoferSay what you will about cats, but dogs are amazing
Broke my thumb yesterday. Not a major thing. We used to call it "skiers thumb" and I've dealt with it many times since I was a kid.
What is cool is that my Golden, my best pal, keeps licking my thumb. How could a dog possibly know that I have an injury? Not swollen, not lacerated, no external signs of injury, but he knows. He just keeps licking that joint.
Dogs are better people than most people.

mdblantonYes they are. That’s incredible that it knows you have an injured thumb. Guess that means a DOG scan may be more effective than a CAT scan

- sorry, couldn’t resist.

1s1kI had a heart attack at 3:00am almost 6 years ago and I went to bed at about 10:00pm the night before feeling fine. My little 10Lb. dog climbed up on me and sat directly on my chest and stared at me in the eyes. I kept thinking she was feeling bad or she was trying to tell me something (she was) but she kept doing it so long it was unnerving. I finally lifted her off and put her at the bottom of the bed where she sleeps. She got up and came and layed against my rib cage until I woke up with a heart attack.
She’s never done that before that night or never done it since. Amazing creatures.

cee_KampThis little guy looks like a small purse dog. He isn't.
His name is Hagar, and he's three years old.
He is 75% French Bulldog and 25% Old English Bulldog. It was a deliberate mix at the breeder, the "mixed breed" variety are called Mini Bulldogs.
Here in the top photo, he is "Mommy's" little boy.
That is forty pounds of rippling muscle! He's got a "hump" of muscle above the spine between the shoulders just like a grizzly bear.
He is gentle, loves to play, and will play/chase Tractor Supply red balls for an entire day if you are willing to kick the ball for him.
If he has a variety of balls out on the floor and you tell him to go get the red ball, somehow he knows which of the selection are red.
He's incredibly fast (not at running) but general athletic ability. Able to go "airborne" and catch a red ball in mid-air.
He is an incredible watchdog, routinely patrols the house at night. He sleeps on the Master Bedroom bed every night and likes to snuggle in at night when it's cooler.
But a strange noise, or a door opening at night and he's off the bed in under three seconds and out to investigate whatever disturbed him.
That's really what I want in a dog, eternal vigilance and a warning that something is going on. Give me just enough warning to prepare.
We do laugh about it, and if he had opposable thumbs, we would issue him a holster and a badge. He's that good!

sourdough44About to spend 8 hours in the truck with my German shepherd. In these temps she gets the rear seat. She’s a good traveler, unless she needs something.
Dogs are more work, but the return is higher.

LOL

No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

ARmanMy girl Ahyoka will lick and very lightly nibble my fingers when I'm having a hard day. She will nuzzle me and press against me.
She will press hard against me and lick and nibble my fingers for hours if she has to. She knows when I'm not feeling well and she will stay close to me the whole time.
My boy is less so, though he normally is more needy and super glue on average.

Ain't it amazing? Somehow they just know when we're not doing well.

Rey HRHThey train dogs for all sorts of things like letting a person know when they're about to have an epileptic attack. I remember one time I had knee pain and was having a hard time going down the stairs, my dog came up to where I was and walked down with me looking up at me.
Maybe a week ago, my wife said she heard me cry out in my sleep and she saw our dog go to the room where I was and was checking up on me. They're pretty smart sometimes but can be dumb when you're trying to train them. Or maybe they're that smart they can play dumb.
"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

They literally
smell it, like with diabetics and their blood sugar (either high or low).
