910,333 views•Dec 31, 2011

In this short video Brendan Ferris of Kells Sheep Centre shows how Border Collies are used to herd sheep. Brendan and his dogs are not only very skilled at what they do they are also very amusing! "

Can you imagine the patience it must take to train them?

Border Collies are not that hard to train providing there is consistency and the dog is kept active.

With very little training, I have seen a Border Collie respond correctly to "bring the sheep home" while we were sitting in a shop out of sight of, and about 1/4 from, the sheep. Dog did the head nod, and ran out. A few minutes later all the sheep were corralled.

Impressive, very impressive.

Oh, and I've seen a pig do it once too. Big Grin

David Lee Roth of Van Halen fame of all people is into sheep herding dogs. He’s got some videos online of his dogs and during the VH concert a few years ago they played a video in the background while he talked about it.

I believe pigs are better herders. I saw it in a movie.

Exceptionally bright and impressive breed, but a terrible choice for most people who won't work them. Without a job to do, these dogs can get out of control very easily.

I saw that exact demo by that man and his dogs last year.

Totally amazing in person.

And he’s got a pretty good gig. ~5 euros per person, 150 or so per demo. His place is behind a pull off for the tour buses, and he does 5-6 demonstrations per day.

There was a mid-80s BBC series called One Man and His Dog which featured sheep dog trials each week. Strangely captivating.

We have a non-working Border Collie. They're terrific dogs, much smarter than me. Their mind is always working, fun to watch her just decide "what's next?". If I want a cigar I just say "let's get a cigar" and she takes me to the humidor. Say "I gotta pee" and she leads me to the bathroom. "Go for a ride?", she'll stop at the Corvette, "No Jeep" and she goes to the Jeep. Never really trained her she just picks it up.

I've been to a trial and we had fun watching the dogs work. They have a Livestock Festival here and they run 1000 sheep through Cedar City. We went to the corals afterward and there were 6 or 7 BCs working. The rancher pointed out that a few weren't "working".
