So far the set up is somewhat easy.
What they DON'T tell you us you need to choose the emulator that works for EACH game.
I figgered this out after choosing a DEFAULT emulator that crashed on everything. Roll Eyes

If I select a system in Retropie it shows me all of them and let's me pick and play. Works great for classics. 64bit games, not so much.

It's just a USB controller.
I'm building one.

It'll configure right to the RetroPie, but you have to configure the buttons manually.
Not that big of a deal.

Would you be able to give details of what all you used?
So many different write ups on line my head hurts as I have no idea where to start.

OK.
First, I went to Fry's and bought the Raspberry Pi 3
A 16 gig micro SD card and a fast 8 gig USB stick

I got a HDMI to VGA converter to use a monitor(you can get most any converter)
You'll need a micro USB tablet charger for power and another for the converter power if you use one.

You may buy a box/case for it also.

ANY USB controller will work.
As will the keyboard-mouse.

Remember, it's a little Linux box so it's some command line stuff like shutting it down.

sudo shutdown now

I was talking more along the lines of the programming of the thing. Figured just one of the $50 starter kits from Amazon would do me fine.
Just don't know what to do after that.

Oh, it's super easy.
You download the ISO image and use the utility to image the MicroSD card.
The starter kit it fine.
There are many many videos on making it work.
