US Army, 1955-1966. All but 1 year in the 3rd Armored Division. That 1 year was an advisory assignment in Iran.

I was 1 of 8 E5s in the 3AD in Germany. Locked in at E5. 7 of the 8 went to Viet Nam. 5 didn't make it back home.

My oldest grandson is an E7 at Ft. Bragg. Has been over in the sand box 11 times now.

His story is literally something else. 100 % disabled, won't quit. Turned down Silver Star 4 times. The leadership finally just awarded a Bronze Star (V) and made him accept it. I think he has 3 purple hearts now.

My younger grandson was discharged due to injuries received in training. 60% disability with PTSD, too.

US Army 1965 – 1968 Germany

I was Navy, 1969-1990, communications/cryptology. No sea duty, lots of overseas shore: Philippines, Japan, Iceland. Retired as a Senior Chief. 4 older brothers all served, 2 drafted into the Army, 2 volunteered Air Force.

Son was Army for 10 years, injured once in Airborne (night jump), again at Ft. Ord in Mechanized. Offered limited duty behind a desk or a medical. Took the medical.

Grandson USMC for 6 years, back and neck injuries, retired 100% disabled.

Father-in-law USCG 30+ years including WW-II, retired as a WO4.

Wife's great-uncle died in the 1918 flu epidemic at Ft. Devens.

Went back to Charleston SC and boarded USS William H Standley DLG 32 several Caribbean cruises and a 9 mo Med Cruise. Reclassified ship as CG 32

Taught on Univac and Burroughs. In 1968, Burroughs won AF contract for base computers. I specialized in COBOL and assembler language. Made contacts in Burroughs, and got offer couldn’t refuse to get out and work in compiler support for Burroughs. Actually got to be alternate rep to ANSI COBOL committee for a while. Worked at world hq in Detroit, moved to Pasadena CA medium scale mainframe plant, then eventually to our financial development center in Atlanta. Took early retirement package end of 2000.

While working in Pasadena, taught compiler class to USAF design center at Gunter, AL. They wanted to be able to debug problems and possibly recommend fix. Worked with design center folks from time to time.
