Can you search the entire country vs one city and surrounding area?

From my experience, a 500 mile radius of the city or zip code you select is the max.

If you try the search utility you will see a custom radius selection with maximum radius of 250 miles.

It was so much better when it was called Facebook Yard Sale

FB marketplace works like any other online classified listings, there's legit sellers and there's scammers you just have to exercise a bit of discernment, patience and common sense to avoid getting ripped off. I found a good deal on a motorcycle trailer a few years ago on FB marketplace so it worked for me.
