Been running in circles for a week. Done the automated configuration without issues, set authentication to oAuth2 as specified. Testing servers setup goes fine but i get authentication error when launching Thunderbird. Servers and ports are as specified. Dig some more, cleared passwords, deleted whole account and started from scratch several times. Recently i found that i have to tell my MS account i’ll be using IMAP with a third party. Done that too. Still, no joy. 0-0 "OP is a troll" - Flashlightboy, 12/18/20

Only thing i haven’t done yet is to clear TB cache… Must dig into it. My 30 years ISP is ditching the email service, short notice. Getting the validation codes sent by MS is almost impossible. MS dorsn’t route my ISP mail services because they’re mostly spam. My patience is shot. 0-0 "OP is a troll" - Flashlightboy, 12/18/20

Thank you very much. It must be some obvious tiny detail i’m seing but my brain is unintentionally skipping. I see the MS blank screen pop up and close. Set up MS with double id…. 0-0 "OP is a troll" - Flashlightboy, 12/18/20

Double check your server settings for encryption. I fought with one of my email accounts for several days after a routine Thunderbird version update. The update switched the server setting to some form of encryption. That particular email system uses no encryption. Once I switched the server setting back to no encryption, all was good in the Thunderbird world again. I do like Thunderbird mostly, I run four email accounts on Thunderbird. I’m new to TB and have followed every step and passed with flying colors, yet it won’t work. Have done the MS pop up login and grsnted TB access, cleared and started all over again and again since the error message doesn’t reveal much to work with. Have been to the MS account security page and compared what they say against what TB uses… Need to have this running ASAP as i’m migrating 30 years of soon to dissapear old email account contents to a new W11 machine and new (to me) email program. Being stuck with what i inow must be an insignificant detail is killing my patience. Haven’t payed any attention to encryption settings. Thanks for your time. 0-0 "OP is a troll" - Flashlightboy, 12/18/20

IIRC, T-bird was late to the party with OAuth2 and several providers failed connection attempts before it caught up. Make sure your T-bird is up-to-date, my version is 153.2.0esr circa 9/1/26, and works fine with several providers (I don't use hotmail, though). I'd suggest setting up a new free account with a different provider, e.g. Proton Mail, to try to isolate whether it is a t-bird issue or maybe some anti-competition=based blocking by your ISP. Also, try operating via a VPN tunnel.

It’s a MS thing. Now you must ask MS to let u use IMAP at your account security page. Working on it. 0-0 "OP is a troll" - Flashlightboy, 12/18/20

Open a cmd window. type bash telnet your-smtp-server.com 587 (or another port if specified). If the screen goes blank or says you connected, you know you are getting there. If not, it may be your router or antivirus blocking the port.

Your should be using SMTPS in favor of SMTP in any case (SMTPS is a TLS encrypted version of SMTP). MS has their own submission protocol, different from anybody else in the world. I forget what it is called, but I'd guess you have to go through the same hoops you did with IMAP to convince their servers to accept something other than a MS proprietary protocol. I'd switch providers long before I'd submit to MS's BS. Seriously, take a look at Proton Mail.

Thank you. Still stuck!!! Decided i would try another pc, just in case there was something with the HP/w11 one. Same frustrating results. Mail will not go out. Done the account deletion too many times, flushed TB cache, deleted passwords ant typed the server settings manually even though the automated setup works fine. Have exchanged too many access codes with MS to verify the authenticity of my accounts. The one i’m trying to use with TB is a brand new account. Only has incoming Test messages and outgoing stuck messages. If this is how it’s going to be now that it’s not an important account, don’t want to know what happens once you depend on it. Will use Gmail. 0-0 "OP is a troll" - Flashlightboy, 12/18/20
