There have been a lot of discussions about the lack of new cars and trucks. Dealer lots are empty. The lack of inventory is blamed on "supply chain problems", including a lack of computer chips. Chip fabricators have said that chip shortages will continue into 2023. We should be so lucky!!! Who knew that neon was used to etch the printed circuits on the computer chips? Who cared? So guess where half of the world's neon is produced? If you guessed Maripol, Ukraine, go to the head of the class. https://www.techspot.com/news/...uction-possibly.html This is going to be interesting. ---------------------------------------------------- Dances with Crabgrass

Yeah, I had to find a batch of RTC chips. This should make for some interesting times.

My point was that some car parts are very hard to find new. That’s where I got mine, my issue was that one in good condition were/are 900-1500 plus couple hundred for shipping. Brand new OEM shell through a friends dealer discount was $450.

A new Suburban like my 2004 would cost over $100,000. I just put $1,400 into my 2004..............new shocks, steering coupler, brakes, and fluid....plus a bunch of small stuff...........and it is running like new.

I’m going to run my 1999 Tahoe forever. Some of the features on newer cars are nice, but the downside always seems to overpower the new gizmos. Demand not that events should happen as you wish; but wish them to happen as they do happen, and you will go on well. -Epictetus

One thing they could do is simplify some models. Every vehicle doesn’t need 25 computers and an infotainment system nicer than the one in the house. Wouldn’t that reduce the dependence on these chips during these times of shortage? If I were looking for a new truck it would probably be a vocation trim model just for the durability and simplicity. I can’t be the only one who wants a vehicle to just be a vehicle. My mechanic is definitely busier than a couple of years ago; people seem to be keeping their cars longer; they're looking at the ~$1,000/yr for maintenance on an older vehicle as making more sense than taking out a car loan for $300-$700/month. ...let him who has no sword sell his robe and buy one. I've got a novel idea, why not just produce a car/truck with ZERO electronics...analog everything? I'd be tickled pink over that! I learned to drive on an old 70's Chevy Nova when I was 10-12 years old. My grandpa kept snow tires on it and we treated like a beater car, which it was. It had no AC and an AM radio and the seatbelts...we never used them anyway. Forty+ years later, I'm still alive and had a blast driving this thing all over our farm. ---------- “Nobody can ever take your integrity away from you. Only you can give up your integrity.” H. My wife just bought a Mazda CX-5, Premium Plus model. No problems. Mazda builds the CX-5's in Japan, so maybe that's why chips aren't an issue, but I don't know for sure. This model is Mazda's top-of-the-line without a turbo. Nice package with a lot of bells and whistles, and reasonably priced.

His diet consists of black coffee, and sarcasm. |
I can especially do without the "nanny" and "tattletale" features on new cars. There are several operations when servicing cars where I need the transmission in neutral, but they won't even let you do that. (Yes, there are manual overrides, but I haven't always got time to find the manual to look up how to do it, let alone take parts off the car.) Although automatic lane-keeping, braking and other "assistants" MAY be useful AT TIMES, they can't gauge the intent of the driver. And screw this "stop & start" crap.
Are they not building what people want to buy? But I'm with you, I "just" have a plain old AM/FM/CD/MP3/satellite (never used the latter two features, but they're there just in case) with simple knobs and buttons, and that is "just right." I don't need a touch screen the size of an old-school portable TV.

I still work on cars from the last century. Even a half a grand repair bill is less than one payment. I am helped greatly here by being able to do my own work.

Same here. I was able to find a lot of shop manuals and a factory scan tool from a dealership that was closing. Been able to replace the timing chains and fix the axle, ball joints, defroster door, etc... without any guesswork.

If you see me running try to keep up |
Because it would never meet government emissions and mpg standards. Also, if it could be done, no manufacturer is set up to build that way. I suspect getting set up would price the cars so high they would not sell. Buy an old Honda CRX and get 50 mpg.

I assume you mean no computer controls, because cars have always had electronics in them. You know - spark plugs, magnetos, distributors . . . But no one wants an early '70s era mostly mechanical car. They sucked compared to modern cars. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

It wouldn't make it to emissions testing. No OBDII, no TPMS, no air bags, no seat belt warnings. Well, you could do air bags if you wanted shock-detonators in the bumpers & det cord running from bumper to dash...

It's pronounced just the way it's spelled |
You only need a chip to run the fuel injection/emissions, another for anti-lock brakes (only if you have power brakes), one for the various other functions like turn signals, dash, air bags, etc., and one for the radio / entertainment functions. That’s four. A modern car has at least 25, sometimes a lot more. You don’t need TPMS, or a backup camera (well, the feds think you do on that last one). I had a great sports car in the 1980s that had 3. I never had a tire go flat that would have been prevented by TPMS, and I never backed over someone or into something.
