How can they hold Sailors accountable for the rules when they themselves are breaking the rules.

That F-35 has not been recovered yet! Seeing the time stamp on that video, and knowing it's extremely likely that the CCP knew exactly where the Carl Vinson was at that moment, this would seem to be a BIG problem!

Yeah, not good at all. I don't understand how they got the video off the ship. One of the first things they do is go to "River City" where they shut down the internet/email or at least thats what they did when I was in. Who knows, maybe sailors today freek out if they don't get a facebook fix every few minutes.

Based on the timing of release, I suspect it was brought off the ship in Hawaii.

I wonder if it was really an O-1E type ensign though.

I believe the first leaked video was very soon after the mishap. The ship was still very close to the crash site.

FYI here's a great early analysis of the crash from former naval aviators, one of which was an LSO (Landing Signal Officer).

If you have any interest in naval aviation, Ward Carroll's channel is a must watch.

Ward Carroll does a great job explaining the process of an incident investigation and why these sailors are in so much trouble. His second video goes into more detail on this.

It will be interesting to find out if this was an automated system failure, if the pilot induced inputs, or both.

I wonder how the aircraft managed to take out all 4 arresting cables?

Seems like the wreckage slid down the landing area, over the cables. Even if it didn’t break some/all if the cables, could be damaged.

There was a Prowler on I think the Connie years ago, started to slow with the cable, then I think the hook broke. Now the plane is to fast to stop, to slow to fly, off the angle. I think the 4 all got out.

There have also been cable failures. I think after X amount of arrested landings, the used cables go over the side. Maybe they save them now?

I believe the cross-deck pendant gets replaced every 125 landings.

Three leaks have resulted from this incident: 2 videos and an image.

The video of the PLAT camera footage is the one USN is pursuing charges since the claim is unauthorized release of govt footage. The other two were recordings/images off of personal devices, still an issue but, I image non-judicial punishment for those. Vinson pulled into San Diego 2-3 weeks after the incident, wouldn't be surprised if device's picked-up cellular signal in nearby Philippines where the incident took place or, Hawaii during the sail past.

1 O-1 and a handful of CPO's...not good that a group of senior enlisted thought it was a good idea to release this. At some point, the USN is either going to confiscate all devices (unlikely) or, require all devices aboard ship are secured in a container that only the ship's command will authorize released. Comedy clubs now require guests to put their phones into locked pouches to prevent recordings; they can only be opened upon leaving, similar to magnetic security device closures.

Every time I see a leaked military video, I am blown away by the poor quality cameras the military is using. A ten‐year-old cell phone would have taken better video.

Location is 170nm West of Philippines big island of Luzon and South of Hong Kong, depth is approx 13,000'. Japanese Coast Guard has already set a navigation alert for the area and I believe a Japanese salvage company was contracted, probably to aid with equipment and/or platform. Navy has a salvage ship in Hawaii, it's a slow mover so, its probably just gotten there or, not too far away; will probably take a month or, two to survey, prep and do the lift. Last year Navy salvage set a record, bringing up a Seahawk off of Okinawa in 19,000+ feet of water.

F-35C that crashed into the carrier Vinson salvaged from South China Sea
quote:
The F-35C Joint Strike Fighter that encountered a “landing mishap” aboard the flight deck of the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson was salvaged Wednesday from the South China Sea.
The U.S. 7th Fleet’s Task Force 75 and Naval Sea Systems Command’s Supervisor of Salvage and Diving pulled the jet up from a depth of approximately 12,400-feet, according to the 7th Fleet. The teams used a CURV-21 — a 6,400-pound, remotely operated deep ocean salvage vehicle — to heave the aircraft onto the diving support construction vessel Picasso.

“The task force’s expertise in rapid, scalable command, control and communications, agile logistics, organic security, and explosive ordnance disposal was the most flexible choice for the fleet commander to respond in a timely manner,” Capt. Gareth Healy, commodore of Task Force 75, said in a Navy news release.

“Ultimately, this deliberate approach resulted in the correct capabilities conducting recovery operations within 37 days of the incident,” Healy said. “Given the unique challenges of this problem, and the unique technical capabilities that NAVSEA delivered, this was an aggressive and achievable timeline.”

The aircraft is headed to a “nearby military installation” for the ongoing investigation into the incident and to determine if it will head back to the U.S.

USNI News was the first to report on the salvage operation.

The crash, which injured seven sailors, severed four of the arresting cables on the Vinson’s deck used to catch landing aircraft, Defense News previously reported. Even so, the carrier was ready to land and launch aircraft within 45 minutes of the crash.

“When the mishap happened, we had additional aircraft airborne that needed to land,” a defense official who was not authorized to comment publicly on ongoing investigations, told Defense News in February. “The training kicked in immediately.”

Photos and video footage of the Jan. 24 crash were released, depicting the jet crashing into the deck before careening overboard and briefly floating in the South China Sea.

A Navy officer and four senior enlisted leaders were charged with failure to obey an order under Article 92 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice for releasing the video footage.

The Vinson, which got underway in August, returned to San Diego in February at the end of its scheduled deployment. It was the first deployment to include the F-35C Lightning II fighter jet and the CMV-22 Osprey.

Glad they drug it up from the bottom.

I guess I find it interesting that the government has put that much effort into getting this 35c and the Brit 35b out of the water/away from potential enemy reach.

I just figured that China already had all the info on it they need (thanks politicians) but the effort to recover them would indicate otherwise.

There is a lot China can learn from its images and online videos etc but certainly there are secrets on board that F-35 that China is not yet fully aware of.
