Why are people putting up xmas lights again? I’m asking if you know about a movement or other reason for it, not if you like lights.
We had to drive across town last night to pick up my mom in law at the hospital. When we were driving her home, we saw a lot of houses with their xmas lights up again. Is there a reason for this?This message has been edited. Last edited by: mark123,

Maybe they just never took them down? Our older next door neighbor leaves theirs up year round; they are the older style with large bulbs. I think they do it because it provides extra light but I think they just like the way it looks.

They’re not just still hanging, they are actively lit and is not just one random neighbor. Even some of the businesses had them.

I don't see what the issue is. Makes your neighborhood look nice at night. Why does it have to be Christmas only. I'd love to see folks leave them lights on year round.

Who said there was an issue? I’m just wondering why. I’m very clearly asking if there’s a reason that I don’t know about. It’s obviously odd for people to once again hang lights. The number of houses and businesses implies a movement. I just want to know if someone knows why.

I've noticed it around here too the past few years but I think most are doing it for aesthetics. It's usually white or light-blue lights, wrapped around trees or decks and porches.
If the wife had her way we'd have multi-colored Christmas lights up year round

^^^In the typical household, lights up all year would be the husband thing, 'cause once she got you to put them up, who wants to put in the time/effort to take them down again!
As far as I'm concerned, white lights would look just fine all year 'round...

This has happened recently here. Just now in March. I’m wondering if it is the lifting of the mask mandate or a Ukraine thing or some other meaningless virtue signaling crap.

no. Mostly white. Some blue. Blue and yellow would have been a good clue but I think they just put up what they had. Thanks for the link. That’s probably the answer.

The only thing of that nature I've seen is people changing their front door porch light bulb to blue, green or red depending on who they are showing support for at the time. Most of the string lights are either for a holiday or just because. I haven't noticed any increase due to Ukraine or COVID.
I have noticed some people put lights up for Valentine's Day and St Patricks Day. Also noticed Halloween lights too the past few years.

One of our trees never came down. It is how I show solidarity with laziness and the consequences of putting up a tree in such a difficult location.
We have a tree in our foyer that is on a large elevated ledge about 14 feet above the front door. I wanted to put a Ducati there but the wife thought a Christmas tree would be nice. It has a remote control to turn the lights off and on.
It took four people to get it up there and at one point the dang tree fell off the ledge and got hung up on our chandelier. It was a tremendous cluster. Rather than remove the tree we have plantation shutters we can close to hide the tree. I have thought about climbing up there to close the shutters but then I think about the tree falling over again.
Every now and then when I feel festive I find the remote and turn the lights on.

Well, I’m not talking about trees. Just lights. And it’s not laziness because they’ve actually hung them again. :shrug:
I think BamaJeepster’s answer makes the most sense. Maybe I’ll ask at one of the businesses.

I’ve seen neighborhoods leave up their Moravian Star year round (it’s typically hanging over the front door) but the Christmas lights year round thing isn’t something I’ve seen in my neck of the woods.

If you do an internet search there are a few articles on people putting up Christmas lights to spread cheer during the pandemic. It might be related to the current state of the world. That would be my guess.
