I have a SA 1911 with a stripped grip screw bushing, or at least I assume it’s the bushing. It just spins. I’ve removed the bushing opposite and tried unscrewing while putting pressure on the bottom but it still won’t grab. Any suggestion other than sending it back to SA?

Would it be possible to run a screw through the other side of the frame and use a jam nut to have it thread out at the same pitch?

I'd suggest you first check to see if you've a local, reputable smith that can take care of it before sending it off to the manufacturer. "America is at that awkward stage. Are you talking about the bushing being stripped where it goes into the frame? If so, then send it back to SA. Most smiths nowadays don’t have the tiny tap to re-do a loose bushing. They factory likely has the right tool and oversized bushing you would need. If it’s the inside of the bushing where the grip screw goes, then just order another bushing and replace he original. Be very careful as the outside threads of the bushing is about as fine as hair and are easily screwed up. Factory bushings should be STAKED or loctited into place. If they weren’t from the factory SA may cover the work to drill, tap and replace the bushing. "Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor.” Robert A. Tap an EZ out/screw extractor into the bushing and remove. IF the threads are stripped in the frame, an oversize bushing is called for. __________________ "Owning a handgun doesn't make you armed any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician." -Jeff Cooper

This reminds me of the time I removed the grips from my then-new SIG 1911 Revolution Carry and the bushings came out with the grips and screws. I had no tools at home that could turn the screw and grasp the bushing without mangling it, so I sent the gun back.

I made it so far, now I'll go for more |
This calls for a dab of LocTite on the grip screw bushing, then put it back into the frame. When the LocTite setsup simply remove the grip screw. The bushings should be LocTited in anyways. Bob I am no expert, but think I am sometimes.

If you need replacement grip screws and bushings for a 1911, Greg Cote shows them in stock. I had a bushing problem and got the replacements from him. Four bushings, fourteen bucks. He has grip screws too, similar price. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

they should be staked, if the bushing or technically called an Escutcheon, has come off with the screw, you can sometimes get them off with minimal effort, put a drop of penetrating oil on the back side of the screw, (thru the bushing) and give it a minute, the, with a pair of pliers and a cleaning patch, piece of fabric etc, grab the bushing with just enough to hold it, without messing it up, and the screws will sometimes pop out, https://chandlersfirearms.com/chesterfield-armament/

One of the gun stores/ranges where a buddy and I shoot did. He had a similar problem with his 1911 and they fixed it right up. I'm blessed with have a top 1911 smith nearby. A few things to be aware of: 1) There are standard width and slim width grip bushings for the 1911. Slim grip bushings and grip screws are used with slim grips. If everything is stock (aka as installed on the gun when new) bushing/screws/grips match. If you are replacing anything, make sure you match grips/bushings/screws. Or install universal grip bushings, VZGrips offers them. 2) Loctite is great. Just ensure you are choosing wisely. Loctite blue (243) is medium strength and will usually release when you want to remove the part. Loctite Red (271) is listed by Wilson Combat as an acceptable way to secure a grip bushing. Loctite Red will typically release when the part is (carefully) heated. 3) If you wish to remove grip bushings, make sure your screwdriver is a good, tight good fit. They strip very easily, trust me. Let me help you out. Which way did you come in?

OP how did you get this fixed? "Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor.” Robert A.
