I'm trying to find a hammer for my tool bag that would replace a standard nailing hammer and a soft face mallet. I want to be able to drive nails and wall anchors on one side, and have a soft face on the other to tap together furniture and whatnot. Preferably in the 16 oz range.

Closest I can find so far is the Spec Ops claw hammer with a soft mallet cover that goes over the face. Kinda works for what I want, but wanted to see if anyone else had any ideas.

(Also, the notion of a tacticool styled hammer irks me a bit.)

It's lighter than you want, but they may have a larger version.

My recollection is that both Nupla and Halder (both very high-quality brands) make metal faces for their two-swappable-face mallets.

My Shooboys came with a steel head, a brass head, and a polymer head. Each can be attached in one of the two striking faces. Not to mention the quality of construction and appearance are fantastic. Look for Shooboy's ad in the Classifieds.

+1. First thing that came to mind. Then I realized that it would be a crime to use a work of art like a Shooboy hammer to drive nails.

So far the Park hammers are leading...

I guess one of the things I was unconsciously looking for but did not mention was that the steel face of the hammer should be integral to the head--rather than a screw on attachment. Now that I see the Park hammer, it's pretty much what I was envisioning.

A Shooboy hammer for gunsmithing is also on my shopping list down the road, along with some brass punches. But one obsession at a time right now...

The park hammer looks like it fits your needs. I just can't bring myself to buy made in China.

I use Trusty Cook and Nupla for soft face and Vaughan/Gravik for regular hammers.

I like the PB Swiss hammers that my work provides. They are very durable, uses disks inside for the dead blow. Have replacement faces available and come in different sizes.

Depending on how handy you are, you could always make one.

homemade example

Edit: just noting that I just found that example and it isn't mine.

Looks like a German company makes something that may fit your description. No idea on how available it would be to get one shipped to the states though.

I can source a USA made Vaughan ball peen hammer in the proper weight, lop off the ball peen and tap it to fit a USA made Stanley Proto hammer tip or a Nupla hammer tip.

Good excuse to buy a tap set...

What would you guys say for cutting the ball peen off? I have an angle grinder, a hacksaw, a sawzall...

I've seen these in autobody shops... maybe check with automotive supply stores to see if there are any local to you?

I have neither of those. I have a belt grinder and a bunch of files. Leaning hack saw at the moment, maybe with a jig nailed up with some scrap wood...

I got curious and checked KC Tool. Here's the Gedore hammer cyanide357 posted a picture of:

And a similar hammer (hardened steel fixed face on one side, replaceable plastic face on the other) from Halder:

Sigh. Ohhh KC Tools.

Yeah, German tools are all the hotness. I've got a handful of Knipex pliers already and some Wera screwdrivers inbound

Waiting for the restock of the Twin-Grip pliers to get a pair of those.

Don't know if I can justify a $50 hammer for hanging pictures and banging together Ikea furniture though haha. I've been eyeing a Picard cross peen hammer for joinery though...
