It really seems like yesterday when this went down. I was in So Cal at the time, and it was not good. I only had a Ruger P89 at the time, but both mags were loaded once the verdict was read.

I remember the poor bastard (Reginald Denny) in the top photo. If he is even still alive, he's fucked up for life thanks to the TBI that resulted from that beating. Proof that shooting is justified even against "unarmed" assailants.

Fake news contributed to this riot. All they showed was Rodney Piñata King getting golf swings at his head after he was down in an endless loop, not the whole video that showed the events that actually led up to it.

God bless the Koreans. Seems like they're pretty serious about taking care of the property they earned.

I was a kid at the time I remember both Denny and the endless loop of King. I remember thinking two things: Cops are assholes and California is crazy. One has been proven 97% false and the other 100% true.

The other thing is remembering the date wrong due to listening to Sublime in highschool and college.

Unfortunately, large swaths of their neighborhoods ended up getting burned-down during the looting.

The shooting of Latasha Narlins by a South Korean shop owner, and later not guilty verdict (same time as Rodeny King trails), was the justification the looter's used to destroy the South Korean neighborhood. The reality, was the shops were preyed upon by the local hood rats, and looked at the South Koreans with contempt.

Been thru the Watts Riot as a child. My dad worked right in the middle of it. We lived real close also.

Then this one. Worked real close to this one. Could see columns of smoke pop up here and there for days. Where I lived at the time Lawndale, Los Angeles Sherriff were four to a car and helmets on with face shields. This one I had Shotgun loaded by front door. Ruger 44 mag by rear door. S&W 357 mag with me when I was home. Had wife and kids also during this one so we were really on edge. They looted two pawn shops and a VCR Tape Rental Store where we lived.

Company I worked for would pay you and you could stay home if your neighborhood was threatened. I worked as a Mechanic for Unocal Gasoline Company. They were asking for mechanics and warehouse people to ride with drivers and they would pay you. Fuel delivery had to continue, something about being part of the emergency response needs. I went home to be with family. Unocal had two stations burned to the ground.

Then there was the O J police escort down the freeway. More helicopters then I ever seen living in Los Angeles.

This guy, David Joo is a legend in the Korean community in Los Angeles. A member of the "Roof Koreans", he explains what happened 27 years ago. Mind you, LE basically were told to stood down and did mostly nothing during the riot. Folks were entirely on their own. Note: apparently, Richard Park's two stores still exist today.

I remember seeing a Craigslist ad for "rooftop Koreans" during the Ferguson riots. It was entertaining.

Watching what they did to Denny changed me forever. I knew then that racism and bigotry resided where few were willing to admit it aloud and that I was as much a potential target as others continually declare themselves to be. I knew then why there are fewer businesses willing to risk those locations and why some areas are best avoided.

Amusing to me is Charlton Heston's account of how his anti gun neighbors came to him to loan them guns as the smoke and chaos neared.
