…oh, they’ll fly over the house next year and the years after that, but it won’t be our house any more.
At least, that’s the plan. We will miss many things about San Diego—our church, singing in the San Diego Master Chorale, hiking with a retired physician’s group, the Fine Woodworking Association with its wonderful shop—but it’s time to move on.

We’re planning to move back to Northern California, near the Sacramento area where we lived for many years. Because our daughter, her husband and the two granddaughters now live there. It’s very important for us to be nearby to give our daughter and her husband a hand in bringing up the girls, raising them to be Jesus-loving children—which they are already.

For us, compared with being close to family, all the negative things about California pale into insignificance. After all, we’ll have a Republican congressman—-at least for now.

You had me worried about the Blue Angels.

San Diego will be worse for your absence.

Any sacrifice to ensure your grandchildren are raised as you describe is worth it.

Don’t worry, they fly every year out of the airshow at Mather. The week prior they are practicing up and down the 50 corridor. Depending on where you live, you can still be in the flight path…

That’s great news! We first saw the Angels at Mather probably 40 years ago. They were flying A4D Skyhawks then.
Our son-in-law actually works in an industrial park on the Mather property. It’s just 15-20 minutes from where we’ll be living.

Sure enough: in this year’s schedule, the Capital Airshow is second on the Angels’ schedule after El Centro, so third week of March.

They've flown the show at Travis most recently 2yrs ago and of course, there's always SF's Fleet Week which is arguably the best setting for photographers with the endless sightlines.

Yes, we’ve been to Fleet Week twice, it’s a great setting. They rehearsed flying right over the Kaiser hospital on Geary when I was doing cardiac caths there.

You could move to Reno or Carson Ciy.
Live in a free state and still be reasonably close.
Just an idea…

That's still two hours away. Thought about it, but doesn't meet our priority which is family.

I meant to thank Pipe Smoker for his kind words above. Too bad we never got together for that bratwurst and rotkohl.

Zinfandel and “port” country. And Apple Hill (fresh produce, Apple donuts, Apple fritters, apple pies, fruit pies, …). With losses comes gains.

Keep ED red. Smile

It’s hard to beat Julian, an hour NE of San Diego, past Mt. Palomar, for apple pies.

Just to clarify, Apple Hill is an Apple farm area with multiple farms. Julian’s is a bakery that sounds excellent. As consumers, sounds like we all win.

You forgot to add one thing sjtill... it is fun as hell being around grand children Big Grin My daughter and her family moved back to Maui from the mainland. A consequence is that grandma and grandpa now fly out there 4 times a year cuz me miss the heck out of those kids. Most rewarding experience of my life by far. Enjoy them, they grow up WAY TOO FAST.

The drive to the top of Mt. Palomar is also great. You can go in and view the venerable 200 inch telescope (through a window). Also the 48-inch-aperture Schmidt. And a radio telescope too.

I haven’t made that trip since I got my Genesis G70. It would handle those hairpin curves with aplomb.

Yes, and as my friends know I've had some incredible experiences, but the grandkids...yes I made it sound altruistic but I can't really stand to be away from them for long. Miss our 3-year-old grandson back in Maryland, and haven't yet seen his 5-month old brother, whom we haven't held in our arms yet.

Once we get this real estate trifecta done, we hope to go back to Maryland.

Pipe Smoker: we should really drive up to Mt. Palomar. I should do it in my S2000 before I sell it--is the road good enough for a sports car?

Plenty good enough, and an enjoyable drive.

Check the route to Mt. Palomar Observatory on google maps.

Hey doc - give me a call when you're ready to move.

BTW, I answered your post on the CCW modifications thread - some counties do not allow modifications.
