how much do I need to drink before my hands are sanitized?

Rubbing alcohol would be way cheaper.....

Never heard of Everclear until I read this thread. Where do you find it?

Any liquor store. But you need to make sure you get the high proof stuff. Some states don’t sell it. I think “true” everclear is 190 Proof, 85% alcohol. Some states only sell the lower proof stuff. Be careful. It’s not joke.

A friend used to make jello shots. He used vodka and I gave him a pint of everclear. The jello refused to "jell". He had to dilute it down until it was about 100 proof to get it to become jello.

if all occupants are hunkered down, there is little need to sanitize anything. if an abundance of caution is required, pick up your mail with nitrile gloves and wait 24 hours to open bare handed.

I’m glad I’ve been schooled on alcohol as a sanitizer. Next time FDA writes us up for not having 10 minute contact time with our 70% ipa I’ll just show them this thread. I’ll also correct our contamination control training group.

Good point. I also realize I should not have said “any” effect. Depends on the microbe but 10 minute minimum is what our studies show and what we validated.

thanks for this post.... I'm headed to the store this morning to stock up and lay low for two weeks and realized I needed to add 10lbs of sugar to the grocery list if available.... going to start up a certain device I have in my back yard in about a week. Out come runs at about 180 proof.

There are definitely higher standards for disinfecting surfaces and instruments. I wouldn't be surprised if it does take 10 minutes for alcohol to be tuberculocidal on surfaces. Most of the surface disinfectants we use specifically say not for direct contact with skin. Way too strong.

True. We mostly use alcohol to remove residual disinfectant like spor-klenz. But for our hands we have 70% ipa sanitizer that our Sop specifically says not to dry. Put it on and wait for it to dry. It’s a pain in the ass every time.

Back to everclear. Most articles say 70% is much more effective than 90% as water is needed for it to be effective. Our trainings state this is due to evaporation. However I suspect that’s just a much less complex way to explain it in a training. 95% is less effective. But people could do some easy math and dilute it. Also jelly is a great idea. Keeps it on the skin and you smell nice. Dogs will love you.

70% ethanol kills bacteria better. Heres a longwinded explanation why if anyone is interested.

Well, that can't be true. Hand sanitizer, as well as wipes that they use before drawing blood and other minor procedures, all are dry well within 10 minutes. I don't know how long it has to stay on, but certainly not 10 minutes.

Now I do know that 70% alcohol is the most effective at killing most germs (whatever that means). Counter-intuitive, but 100% is less effective. Something about water solubility of cell walls.

I don't know if Everclear reaches 70%, but if so, it should be effective.

Actual doctors, please comment.
