Another great character actor gone. Ned Beatty, the indelible character actor whose first film role as a genial vacationer brutally raped by a backwoodsman in 1972′s "Deliverance" launched him on a long, prolific and accomplished career, has died. He was 83. Beatty’s manager, Deborah Miller, said Beatty died Sunday of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles surrounded by friends and loved ones. After years in regional theater, Beatty was cast in "Deliverance" as Bobby Trippe, the happy-go-lucky member of a male river-boating party terrorized by backwoods thugs. The scene in which Trippe is brutalized became the most memorable in the movie and established Beatty as an actor whose name moviegoers may not have known but whose face they always recognized. https://www.foxnews.com/entert...ance-network-dies-83

And we all take one step forward in line. I liked his work. I knew nothing of his private life nor opinions. Seems he had the grace and sense to keep them private. Rest In Peace. You’re a lying dog-faced pony soldier

One of my favorite character actors. RIP, Mr. Beatty. -Rob I predict that there will be many suggestions and statements about the law made here, and some of them will be spectacularly wrong. - jhe888 A=A

"The truth is what I say it is..." What a variety of characters he played in his storied career! "If you’re a leader, you lead the way. Not just on the easy ones; you take the tough ones too…” – MAJ Richard D. Winters (1918-2011), E Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne "Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil... Therefore, as tongues of fire lick up straw and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust; for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel." - Isaiah 5:20,24

One of the best. RIP, Ned. Place your clothes and weapons where you can find them in the dark. “If in winning a race, you lose the respect of your fellow competitors, then you have won nothing” - Paul Elvstrom "The Great Dane" 1928 - 2016

Do---or do not. There is no try. |
Beatty was one of those actors who could seamlessly enter a cast and end up with the best lines and a more memorable character. He really filled out Homicide: Life on the Street’s ensemble.

I remember him as the homeowner where Dan Akroyd and crew set up their AA gun in “1941”. He also played a fire and brimstone priest in an episode of MASH as well.
