Get my pies outta the oven! |
FIL is 60 years old and has worked in sales pretty much all his life and from what I hear he's good at it. He's been laid off 3 TIMES now in the past 5 years or so and it's tough at his age because all these companies want to hire some young buck so they can pay them zilch. He was with a company called Esri for quite a while, then got laid off. Then found another job a a similar company...2 years in, laid off. He landed a good position with Hitachi Data Systems a bit over a year ago, then they went trough a big reorg soon after and became Hitachi Vantara and apparently it's been pure chaos with most of upper management bailing out and he finds out yesterday that he's getting laid off YET AGAIN. I really feel bad for this guy as he's in a very tough spot age-wise; too young to retire but "too old" for a lot of companies out there. Anyone have any leads for me to pass on to him?

Sounds like he's in "tech" sales? Does he live near you?

This is just a lead but the Census Bureau is hiring for numerous positions such as clerks, Recruiting Assistants, area managers etc.. I am not sure where he is located so I cannot tell you what the pay is. As an example: Durham and Wake County pays 16-21 an hour, you make your owns hours, work from home, and get paid mileage. It is temporary but the positions could last 3 to 9 months. On a whim I applied when I was fed up with the mismanagement and BS at the Medical Examiners Office. I was offered a position, and I cannot believe how much I am enjoying working for them. Virginia State Police Recruiting called yesterday and told them the same thing, and that I am in no rush. I have wanted to be a trooper ever since I moved to VA in Nov 2001. If he is interested email me and I can provide more details, or I can give you my phone number

I did a quick search for "Sales" in "Philadelphia" on dice.com. A ton to tech sales jobs came up. If your FIL is a "tech" salesman dice is a good place to start your search. He probably should open an account and get his resume posted. Hoping for the best for him.

Yes, tech sales and had always been associated with Microsoft.

Still finding my way |
I wish he was closer to me. I always need good salesmen and in my experience the ones that are a bit more "seasoned" seem to have the best work ethic.

Big Stack |
He needs to start his own company. Most large companies want to offload their older employees. He might be able to set himself of as and outside contract rep for smaller tech firms.
