Utah has a new State flag
I have to admit, I like it. The old one was kind of boring.

OMG We really are all doomed. But just maybe the legislature will not approve it.

Utah New Flag

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah State Flag Commission has selected a design for a new state flag after reviewing thousands of submissions and public reviews.

The flag features a beehive in a gold hexagon on horizontal bands of blue, white and red. If approved by the Utah Legislature early next year, it will become Utah’s new flag.

Gov. Spencer Cox, who heads the task force, said the current Utah state flag will not be retired and will become the official flag of the governor’s office.

Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson, who co-chairs the commission with Cox, said her message to skeptical Utahns is “The ceremonial flag isn’t going away; instead, we’ll fly it on special occasions and official holidays. We can have both. We can celebrate both.”

The new one does look better. What is the cost to the taxpayer?

Every document, every sign, electronic media, every image of the state flag that is posted in the state of Utah officially will now have to be changed. Sounds like some of that $10 trillion of government spending.

The beehive would appear to be related to religion, if the referenced article is accurate.

It is not better looking. Mind you, the old one is no masterpiece of design, but it was at least traditional.

The new looks like it was designed by the some corporate-ized design firm that normally designs product and corporate logos or modern sports team logos. The sort of process that generates the Accenture logo. Boring, generic, bland.

That's not an exaggeration. Most residents look at it as if we're just paying for a new design. There's a lot more to it than that.

I'm a beekeeper and so I've known for many years that Utah is known as "The Beehive State" and in fact the honey bee is the official state insect.

So, I've got no problem with that.

And BTW a google search says that the Utah offical state motto is "industry".

I don't know. The background on the new flag gives me a kind of beer can vibe.

It looks a bit infantile. Playskool. The easy to follow lines and shapes along with contrasting colors should appeal to the millennial mind. That flag instantly reminded me of the decor, inside and outdoors, of student housing at the University of Kentucky. A few bold contrasting colors and gentle shapes complete with Curious George on the lounge television. The only adult thing I saw was a paper add for a sex and ice cream meeting later that evening. Just what mom and dad are paying for.

Did an 8th grade girl design the new flag as a 4H project? It looks ridiculous. Even California has a better one.

I'm not a Utahn, but I don't like it. It's just too logo-ized.
