My county is counting on everyone doing mail-in voting this year, but I'm not doing it that way. Because of this expectation, there is only one combined voting location for my city and neighboring city, so I would expect YUGE crowds on election day. They do offer early in-person voting at a theater, but I'm worried that my vote won't be as secure as if I cast it on election day. Are my fears unfounded?

As you know, Utah had been doing the mail-in for several years (at least as an option). This year they are trying to push the majority of voting that way. I have not physically gone to a polling place for a few years (since many of them had been LDS meeting houses where CC is prohibited), but do not mail in either; I fill out my mail-in ballot and hand deliver it to a drop box at a library branch near my work.

Now do I know the absolute differences in security between the two? No, but I'm comfortable with it. With both mechanisms I'm the last person to touch my ballot before election officials of some sort do. I do not have that assurance w/ mail.

I voted early at our county courthouse on a machine that looked identical to what I was familiar with at our regular polling place. I've got a high level of confidence that my vote is (or will be) counted accurately.

Not Utah, but I voted early on a machine in Indiana. I was sure to go back to make sure all my votes on previous pages were as I put them in.

Here, they use the same machines for early voting as they do for regular voting. I don't know how secure they are, but they don't have any vulnerabilities that he machines used on election day don't have.

"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Wifey and I just voted today—first time for either early voting or absentee ballot. Our County (Jefferson County, KY) implemented this due to the COVID shit. As they consolidated down the number of voting locations, they re-assigned the machines and ballots used. We were in and out in about 15 minutes; lot quicker than on regular voting day.

As my ZIP code was the one with a known “ballots thrown away” incident, I trust the early in-person voting a lot more than mail-in ballot.

I despise our mail-in only ballot system here in Summit County, Utah. Absolutely despise it. Let me ask you something because this has always bothered me, and I think I might inquire with the County Clerk about it finally.

How the hell does mail-in voting square with our State's voter ID law?

I can attest to my county's security measures being effective.
Dropped my ballot in the box Monday before last.

Got a letter saying I forgot to sign, and to come to the election office to correct my error.
Went in yesterday. They took my DL, found my ballot (still sealed), and had me sign it in their presence.

Would love it if everything in my life was as well monitored against shenanigans.

This, here in Florida the early voting is done the same way as on THE day. The ballots (from the mail) that people dropping them off were just deposited into a sealed ballot box.....well as many have heard of.....here in Broward county in the last election many ballot boxes were "lost" and not counted until well after the election......

Washington is a “vote by mail” state. That is, you are mailed a ballot (sometimes two. At that point you can mail it back, drop it in the drive up ballot drop box, or drive the the elections office and hand it in.

I did the drop box. There was 6 cars in line but no problems. The election officials are emptying them once, and in most cases, multiple times during the day. About 8 PM, the box is emptied and locked.
