Void Where Prohibited |
My last cab ride was around 1988 give or take a year, returning home from a business trip. "If Gun Control worked, Chicago would look like Mayberry, not Thunderdome" - Cam Edwards

1988ish LAX area hotel to LaBrea Tarpit museum and back. Last visit to SoCal. Return trip got into cab playing music where I didn't even recognize the language on the radio. Pleasant drive, small rear seat, warm sun....dozed off in traffic jam, awake with start in a few minutes, normal city sounds but absolutely no idea where the hell I was for a few moments. Odd, refreshing, yes somewhat of an attention lapse.... Ride totaled around $23, similar to earlier fare to the Museum.

Not quite a cab but I took a Limo to a Packer game 15 years ago. It was cheaper and much easier than finding and paying for parking. $100 well spent for me, brother and wives. Not a lot of difference in a cab and uber anymore. Uber has gotten more expensive and takes longer and longer to get to you. And many cab drivers also drive Uber. I'm gonna vote for the funniest frog with the loudest croak on the highest log.

Last time was Barcelona, 2017. We'd done fine with the Metro and walking up to that point, but came out of Sagrada Familia and it was pouring buckets. Took a cab a couple of miles to the next place we wanted to go and it had stopped by the time we got there. Can't remember the fare. Harshest Dream, Reality

My last real cab ride was in NYC, New Years Day 1989. Went from midtown down to Battery Park. Took the subway back. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Doug Patton.

1971. One and only time I have been in a cab. The cab had an accident at an intersection and had to be towed. We weren't hurt, gave a statement to the police and walked home from there at 2:00am. Living the Dream

1971 Berlin. I have used Uber since then. I totaled my VW in Berlin. A taxi made a left turn from center lane in front of me. I was in left lane. Per German police the accident was my fault.

I lived and worked in Barcelona for a year and a half. The three real bargain items that I remember were wine, leather goods, and taxis. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

Around 2005. I knew the driver from his day job, so I got the ride for free. We had American tourists written all over us but we seemed to go directly there with no wandering. All I had was a smattering of high school Spanish which I knew better than to try and of course no Catalan. Did you learn much Catalan in a year and a half? I bet that would be very helpful. Uber in NYC now dispatches cabs. A few weeks ago I used Uber to get an Uber X and a yellow cab was sent.

Probably 2006/7 in Las Vegas. Just easier than retrieving the car and dealing with parking at a casino. Was really inexpensive, well worth it. ________________________________ "Nature scares me" a quote by my friend Bob after a rough day at sea.

As Extraordinary as Everyone Else |
Since I usually don’t take a cab I’ll relate one of the reasons why… The year was 1999 and we were in Istanbul. We had just finished a nice dinner at a restaurant along the Bosphorus and had a few glasses of wine so we didn’t feel like hiking up the hill to the Conrad so we looked around and saw a very long line of cabs just parked there. “Great” someone said and we proceed to the closest cab which just so happened to be at the end of the line. As the driver saw the 4 of us approaching he asked if we needed a cab and we said sure. That’s when the hilarities ensued. Every other driver in front of him started yelling in Turkish, English and probably several other languages. One guy even took his shoe off and threw it at us as we sped off. Being half drunk we thought the whole thing was hilarious but later found out that the custom is to ALWAYS take the cab at the front of the line… ------------------ Eddie Our Founding Fathers were men who understood that the right thing is not necessarily the written thing. -kkina

Only time using a taxi would have been 1969/1970 while in Korea took several rides in the "Kimchi"(?) cabs...... very small compact cars..... Put your life in the hands of those crazy drivers who were zipping in and out of traffic..... felt safer being on and inside the DMZ than in those cabs .... .............................. drill sgt.

June 8, 2000 Las Vegas. Got out of the taxi with my friend and said "I don't want to sound like some hick who just fell off the turnip truck, but that's the first time I've ever been in a taxi." First and last in 53 years. Hick.
