My dad scored a '72 280SE for next to nothing & will be a project in the near future.

Anyone have a good source of information (technical specs, svc manuals) & parts (OE & aftermarket) on these?

Plan is to keep it as close to original as possible, but not a concours restoration.

Looking forward to wrenching on it & getting some time behind the wheel.
Making me miss my '82 quite a bit.

I had a 1982 380SL - California spec, here in Spain and UK - and found that anything almost everything connected to the a/c, fuel system and so on had to be gotten from these good folks - they never let me down, the prices were 1/3 those of UK/Europe and the parts were all the real deal.

Thanks, Tac.
Looks like they only have 2 parts for the 280SE, but will try to poke around a bit more there & see if there's more in there.

Looks like Rock Auto only goes back to 73 on the 280SE. Not sure if the parts cross to a 72

I would look for a parts manual and a service manual for the vehicle, between the two you should be able to find the part number and then use the innerweb to cross reference the part number to see if it still exists and it listed for a later model as well..

https://www.rockauto.com/en/ca...80se,4.5l+v8,1193385

EweBay is an option as well

Forgot- Dorman Great source for all car parts.

Didn't think about Rockauto. They do show the '72 280SE as an option, will keep that in mind once we get the car home & start tearing into it.

I bought a new one with the 4.5 liter V-8 back in 1972. Your Dad paid far too much even if he got it for free. Everything on that 'POS car' failed. It was a total disaster(far far too many MAJOR items to list here but the explosion/fire hazard leaking fuel injectors were one major recall, just for a hint) and I had the benefit of my close friend/fishing buddy who owned the biggest and most highly trusted independent M-B repair shop in a five state area. Even factory service reps used to consult him. I bailed on it at about 1 year and my buddy graciously took it off my hands, with my eternal gratitude.

I don't have any advice for you, but you might check out this guy, Monkey Wrench Mike, on YouTube. He loves to buy old Mercedes and fix them up himself. He just did a 1969 Mercedes. I don't know what a W108 is.

He's actually a TV News Anchor, he used to anchor the Fox station in OKC, now he's in Tulsa as the News Anchor for KJRH, the NBC Affiliate. His real name is Mike Brooks.

He's seriously a real TV News Anchor, but his alter ego Monkey Wrench Mike youtube channel is a bit goofy, well maybe more than a bit goofy, but he's actually a pretty good mechanic and is not afraid to get dirty. He gets them running and drives them.

The man knows where to find old parts, knowledge, etc.

So what I'm saying is, you might find him on YouTube and shoot him a message of your question. He does seem to really love the old Mercedes and I'm sure he'd be happy to help you Or you could probably get his email address at the TV station.

I remember those cars when they were new. Great cars but high maintenance compared to today's vehicles.
Hope this is a labor of love, a free car and he still could be upside down quickly, even with his free labor.
Show us some photos if you can.

It's a little rough, but mostly just dirty from sitting. Not much rust & most is just surface.

Will do. We're both pretty excited to get to work on it.

I only had my '82 240D for about 9 months before an F150 demolished the rear end. About 7k in damage to a 2k car. Slowest car I've ever driven, but it was in amazing shape for having 300k miles on it.

Peach Parts has a vintage Mercedes forum I used to visit. Perhaps they could suggest a parts source.

Thanks, this might end up being a rabbit hole with me working from home, as I've not found a good Prime show to pick up since finishing Bosch.

Also, W108 = chassis code for short wheelbase Mercedes sedans from '67-'72. W109 was the long wheelbase model.
Similar to how the current Corvette = C8
Original BMW M3 was an E30
My C300 is a W205 (2015-current Mercedes C-Class)

Looks like Mike's only done 3 videos so far with his W108, hoping he keeps updating as it progresses.
Apart from some year-over-year differences (72 power window controls are in the center console, not the door like on his '69), it appears to be pretty close mechanically.
