I predict that older cars will see a sudden increase in value.

“All new cars will be fitted with speed limiters from 2022 under tough EU safety rules.

New models will need to have Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) limiters as standard within three years after the European Commission approved the legislation.

The bill includes a raft of new safety measures that are now subject to the formal approval of the European Parliament and EU member states in September.

The rules will come into force in Britain even if Brexit happens because the UK’s Vehicle Certification Agency said it will still mirror the EU rules…”

After working as an auto engineer for a long time, I can tell 2 things for sure. The “safety” equipment installed as standard equipment will raise the base price. Also, with in a short time some enterprising company will find a way to defeat it or modify it. Like defeat with wiring, a new computer chip which will allow speed and performance to be tailored (on American cars since the 80’s), or just replacement engine control modules. In fact I had FBI call me about overriding speed limiters for some of their persuit vehicle. One call to a well known racing enterprise, and they were delivered a few days later and installed.

Of course the tire speed rating must match as pointed out by Dtech below; you just can’t raise top speed by 30+ and not make other modifications to the car.

Last time I was on the Autobahn putting back from Austria in a super performance VW Diesel Wagon, roads were bit damp, we're moving along at 70 to 80 and in the right lane, when two guys blow past us like jet fighters, First a Porsche 911 Turbo and then a Lotus Elite in Bond White.

10 - 15 seconds later through the mist we see red brake lights bouncing from one side to the other, spinning, parts flying, looked like an F1 wreck.

As we pull up we putter by the Lotus sitting in the middle of the Autobahn, no doors, no front end, not much of the rear, bent wheels, parts everywhere and the nut driving it sitting on the door sill calling I suspect the Autobahnpolizei and AAA for assistance.

The Porsche was gone..

Still, If I'd been in a high performance car I'd have been right there with them at full f'n throttle... well until the wife unit broke my ribs or eardrums....

Sometimes speed limiters are programmed into the ECU of vehicles so that the vehicle cannot surpass the speed rating of the stock tires provided on the vehicle when sold, so there is a legitimate reason for them to use them sometimes, but certainly not in the way the Euros are planning. The nanny state at its best.

How does that work when you NEED to speed up in an emergency situation? You can't?

Speed limiters work when you hit the maximum speed set in the system, not how quickly you get to the max speed.

Hence if you have to "punch it" to pass someone you will be OK.

This is nothing new. I don't remember when the 155 mph limit came in, but it must be many years ago, since my first Porsche had it in the late 90's.

Again, just like the last thread, people are completely missing it.

This is completely new.

They're not talking about limiting top speed. They're talking about limiting a vehicle's speed based on the road the vehicle is being driven on. If the road os a 55 mph hour road, then you get to go 55. If it's a 70 mph road, you get to go 70. The system is tied into the gps navigation, uses cameras to read speed limit signs, as well as a database of roads and their speed limits.

Calm down everybody. It won’t happen here. There is way too much money to be made from speeding tickets. Wink

If it wasn’t for speeding tickets our property taxes would go up even more.

It will be easy to defeat. I had a BMW K1200R from 2006 that had a throttle limiter on it, just for the US-spec models. I guess they thought Americans couldn't handle the instant-on of that kind of horsepower. It was easy to remove and then add a device that made the computer think the air was 30 deg. colder than it was, so it'd enrich the mixture too. That's the least nefarious of go-fast mods out there. Plenty, plenty more and they'll just get better.
