Need to upgrade my helmet, it's older & I've long since lost/tossed the visor, as I was only using it for SCCA Autocross & didn't need the visor in the car.

Co-worker has offered me her helmet (a Scorpion EXO), as she got it & discovered she hates the full face, preferring the 3/4 with a full visor, and she's offered it to me for <1/4 retail, as she just wants to be rid of it. It's been stored indoors & only used a couple times.

Looking online, seems they run in the $4-500 range. It's DOT & ECE marked (Snell apparently doesn't approve the full-face helmets with the openable chin area).

She brought it in today, and a test fit at the office, it's pretty comfortable. Will try to get it out on the bike tomorrow & see how it is on the road.

They're good helmets. I've had two (including one Exo) but switched to Shoei for lighter weight.

Another one that's a good "budget" helmet is HJC.

Pic from 2013 - I think this was an Exo.

My first helmet was a Scorpion but it didn’t fit me well. I had purchased via Amazon so I sent it back. I really wanted to like it since the price was right.

I bought a Shoei RF-1200 for a lot more money. Very happy and Snell approved.

My dad's prior 2 were Shoei, RF-1100 (gone, age) and RF-1200 (current). He especially loves the transition visor, as he wears glasses & doesn't have to deal with sunglasses or a tinted visor.

Very comfortable for sure.

No personal experience with them but an uncle of mine didn't like his. The internal sunshade never worked correctly. The rep said they had a lot of them with issues. Not sure what he moved to after.

I had a Scorpion helmet and soon replaced it because it leaked around the face shield. I was riding in cold weather and a spot on my forehead was getting frozen. Afterward, I bought the best Shoei full face helmet available. Even though a helmet is DOT approved, it still might have a lot of little deficiencies that will annoy you. Things like leaking, noises, levers not working smoothly, poor restraint system design, etc.

I owned one Scorpion helmet and was 100% satisfied with fit and finish and would buy another in a heartbeat. They are not the absolute best helmets but they are really good helmets
If the helmet fits you well and the price is right go ahead and buy it.

Free is free. When it is time to pay, Shoei, Arai, AGV, Shark. And I trust or think Shoei and Arai are the best in the world.

Thanks guys. For sub-$100 & practically still new, I think I'll jump on this one, pending a test ride with it on the road this weekend.

At a later time, a Shoei or Schuberth is likely in my future.

Speaking of them, how long do you guys keep a helmet? Talking to people that sell them (Roll Eyes), They seem to think 5 years is too long. I think this isn't so.

From what I've read 'it depends'

If it's frequently used. 5 years seems the common replacement interval. The foams & such degrade from use.

One stored in a climate controlled environment and rarely used may last a lot longer than one exposed to frequent use & uv exposure.

Re: Age

5 years is the recommendation due to the deterioration of materials. That's also an important reason to check the date of manufacture when buying a helmet. You don't want to get one that's been in a warehouse for three years.

But then again, how important is the head... Wink

An Arai saved my noggin in a bad crash. Even before then, the gang I rode with considered them the best.

We had a saying: "if you have a $20 head, wear a $20 helmet."

My first helmet was a Scorpion and was great. Held up very well and protected my head perfectly when I was run off the road at 65mph.

I then purchased an HJC and it’s nowhere near as comfortable as the Scorpion. Lots of water intrusion in medium to heavy rain. While I still have the HJC I have since switched to another Scorpion and am happy. Better fit, less wind noise, no water seepage, etc. It’s not a Shoei but it’s also at a much lower price point.

For what you’re paying with this deal I don’t think you can go wrong.

I only buy Nolans now, because their 2x size are a bit larger than other brands. I have a VERY large head. Unfortunately, it's not as full as I would like.

I just bought my second one, and EXO R-420.

In 2005, I hit a deer. I have no doubt in my mind, my Scorpion helmet saved my life. It did what it was designed to do, absorb the impact. My head hit the pavement about 70mph. My other gear stood up as well: jacket, boots, gloves.

For the price, they are an excellent quality helmet, that is both DOT and Snell approved. Their ventilation system is amazing.

Don't skimp on anything. I also recently bought a pair of their armored gloves with palm sliders. My last gloves did their job, without them, I'd probably lost some fingers. My jacket looks a little worse for the wear, but is still serviceable. It just has added character.

I use HJC (mine) and Shoei (for females on the back), both full face, fold ups. I have no complaints on either.

I would not hesitate to use a Scorpion - they are decent helmets.

Forgot to add: Check out Revzilla.com, they have fairly extensive video reviews of some of their products, including helmets. As well as customer reviews, which I think are more important.

My husband has a Scorpion & is happy with it. He is a newer rider & wears full gear all the time. It is probably the only thing he hasn't complained about.

I personally have never had one. My newest one is a Noland & really like it.
