I need to do a spring cleaning. After retiring, I'm finding there are things that get little to no use now.

My moccamaster was getting used at least once a day, usually 2-3 times per day. I haven't used it once since retiring (I use Kimbo pods in my Nespresso or drink tea).

I have 2 extra QHD monitors that I no longer use - I found 1 is sufficient for me now where I had 3 monitors before.

And a number of other things.

I am loathe to use CL to sell things - too much hassle aside from the spammers. I'll probably end up donating them to a thrift store since they have good life left in them.

Besides CL (or similar like FB Market or whatever) or thrift stores, what do you guys do?

Yea, but it seems like shipping is a bit expensive - big portion of the value. Unless somebody local.

But then again, I'm not an expert on shipping costs. Maybe there's a way.

In my area we have several charitable organizations that deal with disadvantaged and handicapped kids. They take donations of equipment (some of which I suspect gets used by staff, like coffee pots, which is fine with me). They even pick it up and give you a receipt for tax purposes. If you itemize this is a great way to rid yourself of unused stuff and get a low/no hassle way of disposal.
I have also donated to the local community college in the same way but did have to deliver the items.

^^Fair point. Shipping (like everything else) has gotten so expensive.

When you get rid of something it doesn't take long until you need it.

Pirate Ship does not deal with FedEx. Just USPS and United Parcel.

My retirement procedure is:

1. Purposely simplify some aspect of daily life. You have done so with reducing monitor count.
2. Test new practice for some reasonable time.
3. Store unused items during the test period.
4. Take items truly unnecessary to a church thrift store.

My learnings have been that some items thought to be unnecessary are truly needed. My initial pleasure in simplifying overlooked something. I did need the item. I was glad to retrieve it.

A reasonable time is defined by periodic review of the tag on the box or in the bin or whatever. I write the date I stored the items. Later when I realize it has been X months or a year since, I feel less concern in disposing it.

Yup, that's kinda where I'm at now.

Or to a church or women’s shelter that can use the items directly, or the church/shelter can give them to people that will use the things, not rotting at a thrift store with half the necessary parts missing.

You should never get rid of stuff on a whim. Trial periods of putting them away really works.

You never missed it while you weren't using it, but it was always there. Putting it away will tell you if you'd miss it, in the long run, or not.

I you really don't use the Moccamaster, I'm sure I can find a nice home for it. I'll even but you lunch during the exchange

Yea, I'll store it for awhile. I may get back into coffee again. Let's give it through the holidays. If it doesn't get used by Jan, I think I can give it up. Would come with an unopened bag of premium coffee too (unexpired). And mesh filters, paper filters, and I guess the burr grinder too.

You can have it if interested. No charge, just find a good home for it. Otherwise, I was going to go w/ a suggestion above and check if a local senior center could use it.

No matter what, lunch and catchup sounds good.

Shipping monitors really doesn't work well unless you have the original packaging
